Best jacket with small size and light weight.

Rating:*****

I actually bought one in the winter of 2008 from somewhere else. It was my first ever Northface product. It became my standard equipment against the coldness right away.

This jacket is amazing because throughout the winter all I had to wear under it was a short-sleeve t-shirt with a button-up shirt. Neither one was made for cold winter. In other words, inside my jacket was my standard clothing the whole year. Of course, I still wear gloves and sometimes neckwrap, but as far as the upper torso, that's it. Guess what? I was living in Chicago.

When snowboarding in Wisconsin, this jacket even made me feel so hot that I had to get rid of the button-up to slow down sweating. I have to admit that I can bear with coldness a bit more than most people I know, but my friend who bought it at the same time has had the same feeling for this miraculous jacket. We both got rid of the bulky coats we had used to wear.

This year I decided to buy one for my dad, who is very sensitive to coldness, in Taiwan. Backcountry had a big on-sale plus $0.01 1-day delivery on Cyber Monday, so I didn't hesitate a bit to make the order. It turned out my dad loves it, too! He's been wearing it everyday ever since! The order was made on late Monday, and I got it on Wednesday, well in time before I took the flight next week.

I will definitely recommend this jacket, Redpoint, to anyone that is looking for a light weight jacket. Trust me, you'll be surprised with how much warmth it can give you!

Light weight warmth

Rating:****

Good synthetic insulations pack a good deal of warmth with minimal weight. This is accurate to say for the RedPoint jacket. There are many other bulkier warmer insulated jackets out there but for the weight and size this jacket boosts very good warmth. I dont know of any fleece that can match the warmth to weight of this jacket. The best wind resistant/ proof fleeces come close but I do not think they surpass. The DWR coating is effective and gives confidence in any snow condition and light rain outings. Zippers and pockets are all good. Fit is accurate and leaves room for light to mid layering under, and a shell fits fine over, no issues here. Adj at waits let you sinch down. another great benefit of this jacket is its compressablity. It will fold up and tuck in to its chest pocket making it as packable as a 100 weight fleece. There are few neg about this jacket. My dislikes are the lack of any lining around the collar. comfort is subtracted here. a two way zipper would be an improvement, as would pit zips. This jacket is pretty much windproof and for this it does not breath that well. also this jacket is not stretchable at all so it does give up points here to a fleece as well as the breathability. the only other dislike is this jacket is like a shell on the inside same material as outer, so if you are wearing a tee shirt and sweat you stick to it like you would a shell. if breathability and flexability are not your first concerns you will be well suited by the Redpoint jacket.

Excellent Lightweight Jacket

Rating:*****

I bought the Redpoint jacket a month ago primarily as a zip-in liner for TNF Mountain Light shell. It works perfectly for that purpose, providing good warmth for the light weight and a great fit. I have typically worn a men's size small jacket in the past, but found I am more comfortable in a medium in both these jackets. The Redpoint is nicely finished and I can see that I will undoubtedly wear it alone in the Spring when the temps warm up. I live in Northern CA and so far have worn the jacket/liner combo in pouring rain, temperatures down to 16 degrees, snow, and sleet. Complete dryness and perfect warmth have been my reward. It is obvious to me so far that I could wear this combination down to at least zero degrees and be warm, dry and comfortable. The Redpoint as a liner is, in my experience, preferable to a fleece liner. I've had fleece liners in the past, and found them not to be as warm as this primaloft jacket, and I really like the "slippery" effect of the nylon-like material when pulling the jacket off and on over base layers and clothing. What's not to like? BTW; I ordered the "Asphalt Gray" Redpoint jacket to combine with the two-tone blue Mountain Light shell. As I suspected, the Redpoint is the exact same gray color as the lining that comes in the blue ML shell, making it look like it was meant to go with the shell. I have received a number of positive comments from colleagues at work since I've been wearing it.

Why don't YOU own one yet?

Rating:*****

I own a TON of outdoor outerwear - just ask my wife. The look on her face will tell you immediately. Out of all my fleece, softshells, hardshells, and multiples of insulated jackets, the Redpoint is the one I use most often. It's the ultimate all-purpose winter jacket. I have an older (4 years ago) jacket, and it still looks like new. It's fairly water resistant, insulates when wet (not down), is easy to wash and care for (unlike down), is wind-resistant (unlike fleece), and is warm considering how low-profile it is. It has a great range of movement, but doesn't look baggy...and you definitely won't look like the Michelin man. I wear mine from about 10F - 40F and zip it into a hard shell if it gets especially cold/wet. It's my favorite piece of winter gear and TNF should keep it in their line-up permanently if they're smart. The only things they could improve upon is adding an interior pocket or two and also adding pit zips. Let's face it, when things heat up, you need to dump heat fast. I have an older (from 10 yrs ago???) Marmot primaloft jacket that has pit zips...all insulated pieces need the feature (too bad it's no longer made). Get your Redpoint now!

GREAT Denali or Nuptse alternative jacket!!

Rating:*****

I'll start by saying I am 5' 11" 170lbs and bought the size S in this jacket, and for me, it fits Great! After spending the weekend outside in 20 degree midwest cold, I can give this one my seal of approval! It's very light, not bulky AT ALL, with the perfect amount of insulation. What I really liked was how it fit perfectly into one of my older TNF outer rain jackets for extra warmth and wind blockage.
I should add that I own quite a few different TNF jackets and or fleeces along with the Nuptse down coat, and after feeling how nice this coat feels, fits and works with all my other gear, I may just have to put the Nuptse on ebay.
I usually wear my TNF stuff for actual outdoor activities , but if you are buying this jacket for fashion , I would give it an A+ and a great replacement for the Denali fleece so you don't look like every other guy walking around.
My ONLY negative would be that the inside does not have a liner so if you are wearing short sleeves and start to sweat, your arms will stick to the inside sleeves.

Bought a second one!

Rating:****

I love this jacket!

I bought one about 3 or 4 years ago because I was going to go work up in North Dakota (I'm a southern boy). Since then, it has been my go-to jacket for everything. It zips into my TNF shell, and is very warm. ND winters can get to -20F with wind chill. This kept me warm outdoors paired with the shell when I'm moving around, despite the typical near zero temps. It packs down really small inside one of the pockets, and makes a nice camp pillow when packed. I liked it so much I had to look to see if I can find another one, and I'm gla it hasn't been discontinued. For warmer days upp to about 50F, it makes a great "around town" jacket if you leave it unzipped. I wouldn't suggest heavy activity in it unless it's at or below freezing.

The only negatives are that it's not the most stylish thing in the world, and the napoleon pocket zipper tends to get stuck easily. But for someone who cares more about utility than fashion, this is one heck of a great jacket.

ideal primaloft jacket

Rating:*****
pros: thin, lightweight, good styling, large pockets and well constructed (mine is made in vietnam). cons: primaloft-eco not as warm as down (not necessarily a problem if used as intended), no inside pockets, arm holes seem high. this is an outstanding choice for a primaloft jacket (key word:jacket-not parka or coat). it has been adequately warm for me when used in single digit (fahrenheit) weather, provided I had a light layer underneath. my down coats are also usually way to warm to wear when inside-even for a few minutes, but this jacket regulates this situation better. mostly wind/moisture proof. small elastic cuffs are excellent and (along with cavernous pockets) make this jacket easy to use. while i did find the fit on other similar jackets (mountain hardwear compressor) too small (large), the fit on the red point is very good (standard size large sizing), although i found the arm holes to be a tad high, but overall not a problem. great job north face on an ideal primaloft jacket. thanks to altrec for a great deal and fast service!

Holla!

Rating:*****

Love the jacket. I've had mine for a year now. I have contemplated buying another one in a different color. However, I don't recommend growing. I purchased a large. I am 6' 190lbs. When I bought the jacket, I was 178lbs. I have gained 12lbs of muscle in the meantime. The seam in the back of the jacket is now stressed, thus making the sleeves a bit short depending upon how outstretched my arms are.

Again, nothing against the jacket at all, just trying to help out those who are on the fence between sizes. The jacket fits perfectly along my waist. If you are a gym rat like me, you might want to consider the XL. The jacket might fit a bit looser than expected around the waist, but your upper body will appreciate it.

What a great coat

Rating:*****

I bought a North Face last year, and my husband saw it and wanted to try one. So this year for Christmas I decided to get him one. He will not take it off he loves it! It is warm he takes it 4-wheeler riding all the time and he says hardly no wind comes threw it everyone else has other brand name coats but they don't compare to The North Face at all. Also my father saw my husbands jacket and now he is wanting one, so I am going to have to purchase another one for him.
The coat is very light weight, can easily move around in it, not to bulky at all, zipper pocket at the breast is very handy easily to get to.
Hope you enjoy the jacket, we sure do!

AWESOME ALL-AROUND JACKET

Rating:*****
I have had this jacket for about a week now, and i absolutely love it. I am an avid outdoorsman, cyclist, and climber. I have yet to use it biking, (its a bit bulky for that) but I do like it climbing, keeps the core toasty on the rock, and I slept two nights in this in about thirty degrees, I did have a down sleeping bag so that helped, but overall it has a supple feel, great weight, and the best part is its actual functionality, I can wear it around the city or out on bouldering trip with the boys. If you are debating whether to buy this jacket buy it. I had the monkey man last year and it matted up... BUY THIS JACKET.

Negative Reviews:

Very disappointing for North Face

Rating:*
The Redpoint has so many flaws I don't know where to start. First off, it's not very warm. Yes, I know, 100 g PrimaLoft isn't supposed to be, but don't bother using this jacket when the temps fall below 50 F. The jacket feels very "fitted", almost as if it was meant to be used as an inner layer under a shell. When I zipped it into my Mountain Light jacket, the sleeve snaps kept coming undone as I pulled my arms out. Poor quality? Maybe. Even my neck felt cold as there is no fleece lining to keep it warm when zipped all the way up. There is no compression bungee along the neckline like Mountain Hard Wear has, so wind gets in there quickly. In the end I just grab my Denali and go, and not even bother with this wasted purchase.
bostoneyedoc at Altrec on 05/06/2009

Not the greatest. Sent it back.

Rating:**

It was an Ok jacket, just nothing special. Little long for my taste and I would have preferrred the cut to be a bit more athletic vs. squarefit. Sleeve length was good for my long arms, and I'm sure it would have been comfortably warm. I had gotten the bittersweet brown and thought it was a fine color when I took it out of the box, but when I tried it on my wife made note that it looked like the jacket that the UPS driver wears. No offense to UPS guys, but it definatly had an industrial look to it.

Warmth equal to fleece.

Rating:***

In warmth, this jacket is equal to a fleece-jacket.
This jacket packs smaller than a fleece-jacket. That is the advantage over fleece.

If you are looking for a really warm jacket to warm you up when chilled; get a down-jacket instead. I gave 3-stars instead of 5-stars only because warmer, down-insulation would be better. I would be concerned about warmth in temperatures below 35-degrees even layering a shell-jacket on top. Unlike down, you can hike in this synthetic-insulated, jacket without perspiring.

I am 6'-2" tall, 210-pounds. The extra-large fits me well. The jacket is long enough. Sleeves are long enough, with elastic at the ends. The jacket is slim-fitting, but not tight. Not bulky. A very tailored fit. I could wear a large, but a large felt confining. The jacket does not lift up when you raise your arms. A very soft, pliable, comfortable jacket.

Two, good-sized, zip-pockets to put your hands in, or hat. Small, chest-pocket. Jacket zips easily. Resists stains (I spilled ketchup on it and it wiped off without a trace).

I was glad to find a normal-color offered, Navy-Blue, which was not shiny.

This is a very nice Summer, Spring, & Fall jacket.

Good everyday jacket

Rating:***
It's not as thick and warm as I thought it would be. It's pretty thin and lighweight, will not be a good choice if you are thinking about wearing during cold winter conditions (unless you are wearing another shell over it). It's good during early spring when it's cool outside but not freezing.

the jacket lives up to the job just as everyone else has said. but the picture of the deep water blue is way off the mark. on this site it looks like a navy/dark blue but what arrives is a blue (royal). that is my one disappointment.

ok jacket with room for improvment

Rating:***

I would have liked the jacket to have primaloft one insulation instead of primaloft eco. I like thicker insulation. Also I would have liked the sleeve cuff elastic smaller diameter. An inside pocket would have been nice. Other than that the fit is good.

isolates, but deceiving thin and short collar

Rating:***

Good isolator material and good fit but the lack of lining in the collar as well as collar's short length was very deceiving. I also miss adjustable cuffs or something more rugged than a small band of elastic material.
