I absolutely love this jacket. I read a lot of reviews for this and other similar jackets (both North Face and other brands), but really felt like this one was the best overall choice for what I wanted it for: it's very warm, looks great, and fits great. I'm sure some others are even warmer, but I didn't buy it to go snowboarding in Alaska or anything (not that you couldn't do that with this one), I just wanted a warm jacket that looks good and believe me this thing is hot. You won't need/want to wear much under it, seriously, it's warm. My biggest dilemma was what size to order. I'm 6'3, about 185 lbs. I always have trouble with stuff being too short for me, in overall length or in the sleeves. Going by the North Face size chart, I was technically a medium, but I just had a feeling the medium would be too small. I ended up trying both a M and a L, and the medium is definitely way too small for anyone who is very tall. The sleeves are still pretty long, but the medium is just too short, not enough room in the shoulders to move around, and when you hold it up it just looks and feels very light and small. The large however, fits great. The sleeves are nice and long, the jacket itself is the perfect length, and it's got plenty of room without being too bulky. I wanted something that was kind of a slimmer fit, not something huge, which is why I wanted to try the M too, but without question large is the way to go. There are nice draw strings on each side of the jacket to fine tune the fit, and they work out well. The large fits perfect; it's not too small or short, but also is not too big or overly puffy. If you want a really warm winter jacket that looks good, I can't see how you can go wrong here. The L fits great if you're close to my size, and it's an extremely comfortable, light-weight, and very high quality jacket. Zappos is also the best site I've ever ordered from.

Choice!

I recently relocated to upstate New York and was told by several people that I "had" to get a down jacket in order to rebuff the coming cold. I'll tell you right now--I'm not the kind of guy that like to be told what to do, so I punched most of those people in the face/pelvis. However, over the past few weeks I've noticed something strange happening to the trees. Alas; winter is, despite my best efforts, coming. This jacket is great. I am 5'10 and 165 lbs (I'm trying, don't hassle me, ok?) and it fits me perfectly. Also, it is very warm, light, and soft but not incredibly bulky. My greatest fear (other than owls) is finding myself in a liquor store in a oversized puffy down coat a'la George Constanza in Seinfeld and every time I reach for a bottle, I knock 6 more over. It's kind of like Tantalus, or maybe Sisyphus. Thanks North Face! (Also, Moosejaw is the best online retailer I've ever dealt with--by far. I ordered this jacket on a Tuesday evening and it was in my grubby little paws Saturday morning.)

Another North Face Winner - North Face never lets me down! This is my sixth purchase of a North Face outerwear or outdoor product and I'll continue to look to this manufacturer 1st for all out door sporting needs. The light weight and comfort level of this jacket is fantastic. I can easily stash this jacket as an afterthought in an overnight bag or day pack with little concern for space or how it will look when I pull it out of the bag. A couple of shakes and wrinkles are gone and the down puffs up nicely. Nice and warm in a matter of seconds after putting this jacket on! It's a winner. Makes a great winter liner for my GORTEX shell as well...

Everytime I read Into the Wild, it makes me appreciate this jacket that much more!

I consider myself a maven of puffy, warm coats living in Chicago. There are winter days in Chicago where the wind chill brings the temp. down to below 0. Those are the days when you take a deep breath in and the saliva in your mouth freezes. No joke. Those are the days I'm happy I own this jacket. Granted it doesn't help me with the saliva-in-the-mouth-freezing problem but it sure as hell keeps the body warm. The best thing about this coat is that unlike other puffy coats it doesn't make you sweat like a mofo underneath. It's VERY lightweight and breathable. So you don't look like Michael Phelps after a race once you take the jacket off. BUY THIS JACKET!

Good, not Great

Rating:****

first, love the jacket. I gave it 4 stars because there are a few weak spots. The hood is worthless. probably better to just get rid of it or add a better one that is removable. I know it is not meant to be a parka but it is warm enough that I would never own a parka and this even with my gear addiction. There are more cold spots in this jacket than with the others I have used like montbell. I think it is the baffles or how the seams are sewn through. Overall though for a very warm jacket that looks good, fits good and compresses very nice this is tough to beat for the price.

great jacket short sleeves

Rating:****

i love this jacket except the sleeves are a little short. However, i do have long arms. i was thinking about getting a large but then the jacket is too big everywhere else. The temp dropped down into the teens here in atlanta a few weeks ago and the Nuptse kept me warm and toasty. its a little bulky but thats what one should expect when buying a down jacket. It is wind proof, from what i could tell, up to maybe 20-30 mph gusts, and i have had no experience with the jacket in the rain. also, kind of a pain to roll this up into its stow pocket, but hey, maybe i was doing it wrong.

This is a winter coat

Rating:*****
I switched to this coat after being disappointed in the warmth of the condor triclimate which North Face for some reason markets as a jacket for "extremely cold weather"? This jacket is perfect for those of us who live where "extremely cold" is really just that. It is 18F with 50mph wind gusts today but as far as my torso is concerned it's nice and toasty outside. More pocket room would be nice. I'm 5'10" 170lbs and I went with the large. I think a medium would have worked as well but I like the large, that little extra length is nice to pull down on days when you don't have the extra layers under your pants.

well its more than warm enuff and is plenty durable what ever i done in it,from walking dog to ice climbing.i have only just purchased another one due to the age of my other one which is still plenty wearable and durable despite being 7 yrs old at least, and has now become a dog walking jacket for the uk's crappy weather, anyways the jacket is lovely and warm and i have never been soaked in sweat or rain with this awesome jacket, unlike some rab jackets i have owned, and which make you sweat alot i found.......well hope you enjoy it as much as i do will always purchase these for the united kingdom and anywhere else in the world.............

Excellent for cold weather

I treated my son to the North Face brand for Xmas. I ordered it 2 days before Xmas and it showed up on Xmas Eve as promised. He took it with him to London for New Years there. He said that it saved his life from the bitter cold and wind. He loved that it had a hood enclosed for the wet rain as well. I am so satisfied with this site that I went an ordered a long coat for me as I am going to be in Detroit and Ohio next week. I will let you know upon my return.Plenty of snow for me to try it's durability with.

I simply can't get over how light this coat is! It feels light as a feather and yet keeps you incredibly warm, even on wet windy days. Definitely not as bulky as it may look. The fit is perfect as well. The sleeves are nice and long. I'm 6'6" and rarely find coats with sleeves that are long enough. The quality here is top notch, too, superb construction. North Face always seemed a bit pricey to me as compared to similar items from other manufacturers, but I've got to say the quality justifies the additional bucks on the price tag. A great buy.

Average down jacket

Rating:***

The down is 700 fill, which is below the quality of other jackets made by Montbell, Rab (which uses European down standards), Western Mountaineering and Feathered Friends. This makes the jacket heavier for the insulation value it provides. In addition, the construction is sewn-through. In wind, there are definite cold spots on the seams.

That said, the jacket is warm and sufficiently large enough to layer a puffy midlayer underneath. I have used it (with layers underneath) in conditions to -20F with windchills much lower.

The DWR on the shell is average and wears out after a while. When the DWR is gone, the shell wets out and gets the down wet. This compromises the insulation value.

The hood is just a nylon hood that rolls into the collar. For winter conditions, I want an insulated hood to keep my head and neck warm.

For the cost, the Nupste's hard to beat. This jacket regularly goes on sale, so don't pay full price for it.

Matt Lutz at Backcountry.com on 12/09/2009

Not too bad. Good for the price.

Rating:***
Nice and toasty during winter in town. Keep the waist drawstring pulled tight to create a decent air pocket that you can warm up yourself. In town 5-10C I can get away with a t-shirt or a long sleeve t. Out in the hills 0, a decent base layer will keep you toasty around the fire. I didn't get to active in it as I am a sweater TMI. Stowing it in its pocket is a bit scarry as I always get the feeling that the zipper or corner seems are going to tear.

NUPTSE JACKET-NOT AS WARM AS MT. HARDWEAR PARKAS

Rating:***

Hey Gearheads,
I have the North Face Nuptse. It has a high loft and a lot of down.
But has negatives:
Q) Not great on wind resistance.
R) Short length - 27 1/2 inches.
S) Not as warm as the Mt. Hardwear Subzero SL Parka which is much warmer.
T) Nuptse is OK for a 30 degree day, with mild winds, but don't expect warmth for any colder weather.
