As well as being the only helmet ever that doesn't make my head look like a wildly overambitious lollipop/mushroom, this helmet is amazing because it has mahoosive vents, which mean that I can teach on the nursery slope in 20 degrees C and not fry. I can also play in the pow at -15 degrees C and not freeze. Although I had trouble initially getting my (Oakley Stockholm) goggles above the brim to sit on my forehead, I stretched the straps out a few times and they sit there fine now, but still hug my face when my goggles are on. The brim fits perfectly with my Oakleys and the soft ear pieces mean that I can put my sunnies on without getting an ache on the sides of my head.

I haven't had a big crash in this helmet so I can't speak for it's safety, but my head feels warm and snug, or cool and comfy - and I don't feel ridiculous. Win!

Shame they don't do it in blue anymore...

Rock it like no one else!

This is one of the best fitting helmets. I have tried so many, even children's, because I have a small head. This is the only one that fits me properly. There is an adjustable strap in the back of the helmet that rests at the bottom of your head. It lets you tighten or loosen the head space in the hemet, for the perfect head hugging fit. It's light and comfortable as well. Love the vent system, makes it weather versatile. The only downside is that everyone and their mother seems to have it. Seriously, I have seen a lot of parents in this helmet, not to mention my own. Its popularity is only based on the fact that it's such a reliable helmet though. I can't knock it since I feel that it is one of the best helmets out there right now. They just need to release more color combos. So rock it like no one else, and you're golden!

I bought this helmet after giving up on my Giro G9. The G9 felt too loose, and there was a large gap between helmet and goggles. Errors on my part when making my purchase. The Variant solves both those problems. Excellent initial fit is improved with a quick squeeze on the cinch strap in the back, customizing your fit. Whether you are on a straight line down a groomer, or bouncing through powder, this helmet stays in place. The brim deflects wind(as it should), and the removable inner cap can be positioned forward so your goggles overlap creating a perfect seal against the elements. I haven't tested the impact qualities yet, but the solid construction and durable materials inspire confidence. While everyone's dome is different, if this helmet feels good in the shop, you will love it on the mountain.

I found the white pinstripe helmet at a department store in Bountiful that was on sale, 30% off. for $119 this helmet is amazing!
The vents work incredibly well. Super toasty when you want it to be and instantly cools you off when you open them. There's two vents, symmetrical ones of each side of the helmet for those of you who's heads get hotter on one side than the other..
I'm 6'3'' 220 lbs and have a pretty big melon. I got the Large and it fits exactly, amazingly, perfectly. Like a glove.
Keeps your ears warm and the padding is cushy and strategically placed to where you hardly realize you're wearing a helmet.
Highly recommended, especially if you can find it on sale.

Great Helmet

I have used this helmet about 10 times now, and absolutely love it. It fits great, is comfortable, keeps my head warm, and doesnt make me look like a bobble head. There is a decent amount of adjustment present in this helmet, which was great for me. I also added the skullcandy headphones for the added enjoyment of music while I ski. All in all I am very happy with this purchase (and it keeps me safe, too).

The variant brim looks great (got mine in chocolate check). The helmet is lightweight and seems to afford a great deal of protection. Also, the helmet accommodates my Bolle goggles without a 'gaper gap' at the top. The ventilation system is really slick, opens and closes easily to regulate airflow to the head. I'd say based on the quality of the craftsmanship and the great looks, this helmet is worth the pretty high price.

I am a firm believer in wearing helmets for anything because they have saved my head on more than one occasion. I looked around for a long time and tried many different models and brands. The Variant Brim is sweet, it fits great, its warm and easy to adjust ventalation. This has to be one of the best purchases I have made in a very long time. I highly, highly recommend this helmet.

Overall great helmet

This helmet is great. It has proven me well during last years ski season. Extreamly warm and easily vented (much better than a winter hat). Only complaint would be that the visor prevents the ability to keep goggles positioned on the helmet while in the lodge. They stay above the brim of the helmet but occasionally take off and fall off the back off the back (dangle on the goggle retainer behind you).

this is my first year using helmet,thought would be bulky and uncomfortable,but it is very comfortable, love the ventalation adjustment fiture. i paid $10 extra bought the brim g10 mx kind b/c i thought it would block the sun as visor, but it does not. sun still shines in my eyes on lift chair, it also gets in the way trying to put on goggles. should have bought the regular type g10

Nice upgrade

A nice upgrade from my 5 year old Giro Nine.9. Helmet fits well, and the ratchet in back helps; works just like a bike helmet. Slider tabs for vents don't inspire confidence that they'll hold up for many uses, but they haven't broken and the vents are nice. Good front vents help keep goggles clear. Optional/add on audio ear flaps are a little thicker than regular ones and don't get really loud.

Ya I dont know, there's somethin with the construction of this helmet.

Pro's-fits great, lower profile than most with the big dome look, light weight, awesome ventilation...the obvious reasons.

For the negatives....the helmet is built in two pieces, due to the venting I believe. The top portion feels a little flimsy for my liking. Right out of the box if feels like it could almost be peeled in two! There's some play in it, almost like the two pieces aren't totally sealed which is causes this annoying squeaky sound. Feels like if my visor smacks a branch it will peel the top half right off the helmet. Its like im treating this thing fragile'y (sp?) ,afraid of breaking it.

If your rough on gear think twice.

Cool piece but Smith's warranty sucks.

I got this helmet last winter because I wanted a bucket cover that had a visor on it. Well the visor ended up breaking after only owning the helmet for two days. I tried to get Smith to replace it and they wouldn't. Smith wouldn't even let me buy a visor to repair the helmet myself. Smith's customer service was not professional and acted short and rude with me. A $180 helmet became a piece of ugly junk in two days. If you wear a helmet for a reason other than looking cool, don't go with a Smith visored helmet.
