There's much to see 14,000 feet up at the Chasm View bivy: a vertigo-inducing panorama of the Diamond and alpenglow over the Rockies. There's also chilly air in any season, and that's where the Patagonia Down Sweater for Women comes in. It delivers minimal weight, superb compressibility and high-loft warmth. The ripstop shell (1.4-oz 22-denier) with a DWR (durable water repellent) finish does more than look sharp: This mid-layer insulator is tear-resistant and windproof and made from 100% all-recycled polyester. Details include top-quality 800-fill-power goose down, an updated fit and styling, quilted-through construction, two exterior zippered pockets and a stretch-mesh interior chest pocket that doubles as a zippered stuff sack with carabiner clip-in loop. The Women's Down Sweater is an ultralight jacket with highly compressible down insulation and a windproof shell for cold mountain pursuits.

Features:

  • Drawcord hem
  • Elastic binding at armholes
  • Fabric: shell and lining - 1.4-oz 22-denier 100% all-recycled polyester ripstop with a DWR (durable water repellent) finish
  • Insulation: 800-fill-power premium European goose down
  • Pockets: two zippered handwarmers, one interior zippered stretch-mesh that doubles as a stuff sack with carabiner clip-in loop

Love it!

Rating:****
I looooove this jacket. I bought it for myself as a birthday present to use for travel and backpacking. I wanted a jacket that was warm enough for cool fall evenings and that packed down small. I was sick of trying to carry a bulky fleece in my pack.

I am so happy with my purchase. It squishes down to the size of a grapefruit and weighs next to nothing. Plus it's warm. I use it for backpacking and when I'm traveling, I can fit it in my carry-on purse. I'll even use it as a pillow on the plane.

Warmth-wise, it's perfect for fall and spring and even colder days if you have a warm sweater and a water-proof shell to layer over it. I wouldn't wear it in the depths of winter, but I wore it on a backpacking trip where the temp got down to around the freezing mark and I was happy.

This jacket is light enough that I've been known to wear it to keep warm in my freezing house. I'll even sleep in it.

Style-wise, well, it is a little lacking. The arms look a little Michelin-man and are weirdly over-sized in the upper-arm area, but when you're layering a bunch of stuff, you end up being thankful for the extra room.

Great for travel!

Rating:****
I live in Hawaii so a down coat is not something I've owned for decades. However, I travel a lot and will be going to colder temps this winter. I would give this 5 stars except for the length. After wearing this coat in Vegas (50 degrees) over a t-shirt and in Utah (25 degrees) over 2 layers of wool, I found it to be very versatile. But just about 3-4" too short. I found I had to keep tugging the coat down while sitting and always had to shift things around when I stood up. Also - it's not a jacket you can layer under too much. For me, I went with a Med. as it fit me best with 1 light layer underneath. I can't wear an R2 under it (too tight in the arms). So I made the sacrifice - M for nice fit with little layering under. Large was just too big and allowed too much air to get in without heavy layers. I'm 5'8" and 150lbs. So I'm not heavy, skinny or super tall. I think this would be a 5 star if there were just a few more inches at the bottom. Otherwise - it's great for travel, light, packs up well and kept this Hawaii girl toasty inside and out!

Puffy...

Rating:****
Its a down jacket. It is supposed to be puffy. And the thickness of the puff is great. Warm and cozy, but not pillow-worthy. The green color is super bright and nice. Its extremely light and seems like it would hold up well. The problem is the cut is just too wide. The upper arms are suitable for steroidal body builders. This isn't too bad once the crease falls out a bit, and could be a big perk if you want to do some heavy duty layering and still have full movement. Really, this fits as it says. "Regular fit." I just wish they would make it a slim fit cut instead. I really wanted to love this jacket and wear it every day all winter long. But I don't like the look of it. (Also note, with a size D, I think the puffiness is especially unflattering. Might not be a problem with less up top.) So if you don't mind looking fluffy, then you'll love this jacket. I'm going to try my luck with the slim fit down sweater vest.

Great fit, great color!

Rating:*****
I'm 5'8"/155lbs, and a Size Medium was perfect for me in this coat. I had the 2008 design, but exchanged it for this model because the upper arms were too big in last year's. This year, the cut is better, and the arms are not excessive. I tried a size Large first (thinking about layering), but this is a "Regular Fit" item, and the Large had at least 5 extra inches around the back and sides. It was also longer in the body. The Medium is a couple inches shorter than I would like, but it works for me. I did not have a problem with the zipper, as the previous reviewer did. The Green Oasis color is fun and refreshing - great for gray days of Winter. Since it's so light and packable, it makes a good warming layer beneath the Shadow Trench Coat, for days when you may hit a storm while hiking. You can pack both, and they're only 22.6oz combined. I love this jacket, and consider it money well-spent.

The Best Patagonia you can buy

Rating:*****
I love Patagonia. Their stuff has been in my wardrobe (or in the case of their luggage, my wardrobe has been in their stuff) for decades. I still have some stand-up shorts and polos that go back to college days (Yes, they still fit). I received one of these that I love, have bought two kid's versions for my girls and this Xmas, bought one for the woman who works for me. Because this is real down, it is super light in weight, but it is warm FAR beyond what you'd imagine from this airy garment. It's not really a technical fit, nor does it have many features, but it is a timeless, functional, well designed jacket anyone should own. One other note... the girls wear theirs ALL the time, and after two seasons, they are still in great shape. If you have kids, the kid's version is an awesome addition to any child's wardrobe.

Love this Fantastic purchase

Rating:*****
I love this down sweater/jacket. It is so warm and so light weight. I put it in my pack all scrunched up in its pocket and take it with me almost everywhere. I have been a patagoniac for years since the first synchilla jacket came out and I am a medium busted size 14 to 16 woman with my grandmother's larger, but strong arms and I want to thank Patagonia for finally making an article of clothing that does not smash my chest and is perfect on my arms. I wish many more of your garments had this kind of room for a normal XL woman. Also got it in the green, which is a great color. I have been missing the bright colors the past two years. All those pinks and pastels are not the patagonia I have been buying over the years.

Preliminary review

Rating:*****
Well, I am very happy with this purchase so far. I say this because this is exactly what i was looking for as a layer under my snowmobile jacket, which is just a shell. I normally wear a fleece jacket under it, along with a base layer (or 2). So I really haven't tried it yet as I am in Michigan and it hasn't snowed yet...therefore no snowmobiling yet. I have to wait to experience it in the cold, for the purpose it was purchased, before I can give it a true review, but I have to say that I am pretty confident it will be what I need. It runs a little large, I originally ordered a medium and had to return it for a small, even with other layers under it, the medium was big. Patagonia has been wonderful to work with.

I wore this backpacking in the Brooks Range in Aug ... camping in the backcountry for three weeks, including temps in the upper 20s and snow. it was great. I wear it every day now back home in NJ and it is perfect for cool to cold weather. It is super lightweight, packs small (great for backpacking) and attractive (I have it in brown and I love the color.) I have another down jacket but wear this one all the time. The sizing works well for me too; I am 5'9" and 125 lbs. and wear a small. The sleeves and length are fine for me. It washes well too. It is a true Patagonia quality item!

Excellent.

Rating:*****
Last year a friend of mine let me wear hers when we were at a chilly, windy outdoor event. I loved its lightweight warmth. So, this year I bought my own at a local store (gotta support the local businesses!). It's a tough little jacket, really nice on it's own, or layered under an old Carhartt for barn chores. The Oasis Green is a color I never thought I'd wear, but I was surprised that it goes with almost everything. One of my favorite details is the tiny little chin-guard flap at the top of the zipper. The fit is a bit large. The Medium fits me (5'8" 145#) just right.

Best jacket ever

Rating:*****
If you want warmth without the bulk, then buy this jacket. I got two - for my husband and myself - to wear while hiking the Andes in Peru, and we had everyone, including our trek guide, drooling over these jackets. One of the Peruvian guides kept on hinting that he wanted my husband's jacket - no way were we giving these babies up. They were our favorite purchase for the trip! Compresses down into a tiny little ball. Fits very true to size, even with layering. I normally wear XS, and the S was way, way too big on me.

Weird fit.

Rating:**

Personally, the fit is boxy. It is a little shorter in length than I typically like. It would be a much better coat if it had a more athletic cut to it. I am looking for an alternative. Any suggestions?

I don't understand...

The jacket is slim but the arms are wide? Whose arms can fill out that thing? As much as I wanted it to fit, it just didn't. The small was too short, the medium too big and the arms were big in both. And I'm not tiny at 5'7" and 132 pounds. Glad to hear it worked for others. Maybe next year! I'm dying to get one.
