Positive Reviews:

Patagonia Down Sweater vs. Marmot Zeus

Rating:*****

I was specifically looking for a down sweater to use underneath my hardshell when skiing. For what its worth, I ski in the mid-Atlantic area where the runs tend to be short, and one of the lifts that I use regularly is very slow and lately has been exposed to very strong winds. This adds up to not a whole lot of body warmth being generated before I am sitting on the lift again. I am 5'10 and weigh 165 pounds. I was specifically looking for something that fit well and provided a good compromise between minimal bulk and maximum warmth. Over the past few years I seem to be colder on the slopes then most of my friends that I ski with, although I am still much warmer in general than my wife.

I narrowed my choices down to the Patagonia Down Sweater and the Marmot Zeus because of the overall high reviews that both have receive, the excellent reputation that both manufacturers have and the lifetime warranty offered by both Patagonia and Marmot. I ordered both items in a size medium so that I could do a side-by-side comparison. The Marmot Zeus is definitely the warmer of these two garments. It clearly has more loft (my wife said I had the Michelin Man look going), and the neck comes up a little higher than the Patagonia Down Sweater. The Patagonia sweater is more form fitting all around, and the sleeves, neck and overall length of the sweater are all shorter than the Marmot Zeus. In fact, my sleeve length is 32/33 in dress shirts and the sleeves on the Marmot Zeus were actually a little long for me. I weighed both jackets, and on my scale the Zeus weighed 438 grams (with tags) and the Patagonia Down Sweater weighed 355 grams (with tags). Both jackets appear to be very well made, and I was impressed with the overall quality of both.. One definite bonus for the Marmot Zeus is the addition of an internal pocket that can be used to keep small food items warm when outside. The Patagonia jacket only has the internal pocket that is intended to be used for stuffing the jacket.

For my purposes, I chose the Patagonia Down Sweater. The main factors that finally drove my decision: 1) less bulk in the arms – I could barely tell that I had this jacket on when wearing a shell, while I felt some restriction in movement when wearing the Zeus under my shell; some of the bulk in the arms is inevitably due to the longer length of the sleeves on the Marmot Zeus; 2) lower neck – the higher neck on the Zeus combined with the tight neck on my shell made the Zeus feel less comfortable.

Despite my choice to go with the Patagonia Down Sweater, the Marmot Zeus is, at MSRP, is a great value, particularly when compared to similar offerings from the North Face and Mountain Hardwear. Honestly, if it weren’t for the fact that I was able to get the Patagonia Down Sweater for the same price as the Marmot Zeus, I probably would have gone with the Marmot Zeus. This would be particularly true if I were not so focused on using this jacket as a mid-layer.

Awesome backpacking jacket

Rating:*****
This jacket is awesome and is probably the warmest item of clothing I own, per ounce. I say "per ounce" because you should consider how much this jacket weighs and not expect miracles. It weighs 11 or so ounces and there *are* limits to the performance of such a garment.

In my opinion, this is the perfect 3 season backpacking jacket to keep you warm at camp. It's not a hiking jacket as it's not terribly breathable and compressed and/or wet down doesn't insulate so if you get sweaty (on your back for example) the jacket will be useless. Use a fleece or a thicker baselayer if you're going to hike in cold conditions.

To give an idea of warmth, I'm a fairly warm bodied male and will wear this in temperatures down to 35/40 degrees with a Patagonia Capilene 4 baselayer, which is the warmest baselayer they sell. Below that and you'll need to be hopping around to keep warm, or put on additional layers like a hard shell to keep the warmth in.

It's also not terribly durable, which again is expected given the weight of the garment. So if you get too close the fire you'll probably eventually burn a little hole in it. REI sells a really nice nylon patch kit that's like a very strong scotch tape and that has worked perfectly to cover the little hole I got. I was mortified when it happened, but 10 minutes of deep sobbing really got it out of me and I was a new man. Party on.

Incredible Jacket

Rating:*****
This jacket is as close to perfection as you could come. It is exactly like the description say it is and it is as good as everyone says it is in the other reviews. Most of the time I can't believe how warm it is and yet it's so "extremely light",warm and unbelievably good looking for a "down" jacket.. I live in Beijing, China and the winters are very cold. I have worn this in all kinds of conditions as insulation and as a all around jacket. The later is incredible because it seems to be perfect for a very large temperature range. From a little cool to just plain cold. When it gets really cold I wear it as a insulation (it's perfect for that because the cut is nice and trim and doesn't bulk up inside of a jacket..) or put something inside (it's perfect for that because the jacket is expands easily in the sleeves and torso but still looks good when you wear something underneath) Everyone is always talking about how great technically Patagonia is and how long the clothes last (I have an original rain jacket that I bought in 1988 and it's still holding up......) and both things are true. But the bottom line for me is that I HAVE TO LOOK GOOD ha ha ha ha....and the Down Sweater makes me look ike a movie star...........!

The Patagonia Men's Down Sweater earns 5 stars in all categories for the follow reasons: First, it's a Patagonia product. For anyone not familiar, Patagonia is a top shelf outdoor products company. They have been around since the 70's, are wholly owned by Yvon Chouinard, and are dedicated to one thing: making the absolute best product for the intended purpose. That does not mean cheapest, or even most affordable, but it does mean highest quality. Patagonia products are expensive, but because of their active commitment to preserve our environment I happily pay the price. Now about the "sweater". This is the perfect insulating layer for the high country. It's extremely light for its warmth factor, extremely packable, and extremely comfortable in a wide temperature range. My first use of mine was on a four day trip to summit Granite Peak (at 12,799 feet the highest peak) in Montana. I wore it alone and under a shell, in temps between 35 and 50 degrees (early August) and winds from calm to 60 MPH. I was comfortable (not too hot) in this range in this jacket. It allows full freedom of movement. The quality is superb. It's a no frills, ultralight, insulating layer. It does everything the product literature promises. If you can afford, own one!

I love it, goes *ANYWHERE*

Rating:*****

I originally got this to use as an outer layer when backcountry skiing. It packs up small and light for the skin up, then throw it on over your softshell jacket when you stop for lunch or something and keep nice and toasty warm. It's great for that.

Then we got a cold spell down in Seattle so I started wearing it around town and to work. Works great for that too. Now I wear it all the time. It's also great on airplane trips since it is light & small, keeps you plenty warm, and doubles as a pillow or blanket. Basically now I wear this jacket all the time from Nov. to April.

It has developed a small hole where some of the down started poking out. But the nice thing about the black color is it is exactly the color of electrical tape, so a tiny patch of that fixed it right up and is not noticable at all.

I am 6', 195 lbs, wide shoulders, long arms & the Large fits perfectly.

Best Cold Weather Item Ever

Rating:*****

I had my down sweater for 4 years. I just passed it on to my 14 yr. old son, who wears it proudly and keeps telling me how warm, soft and light it is. I wore that thing on his Boy Scout winter camping weekends and it made things so much more bearable. The other Dads used to see me standing around in frigid temps looking warm and comfortable and ask why I wasn't shivering. I would wear a tee shirt or ligt long sleeve cotton shirt underneath and still felt warm. It's light enough to carry in a pack and break out whenever you need to take the chill off. I own every kind of cold weather gear, some of which has cost me an arm and a leg, but I found myself wearing my down sweater all the time. I leave it in my car and probably use it 8 months out of the year. This thing is a no-brainer. It's the best! The guy who said that it's no warmer than capilene never wore this sweater.

Great quality

Rating:****
This is a great jacket and you can rely on unbeatable quality from Patagonia. But the potential buyer must know that this is not a stand-alone piece for really cold weather. According to Patagonia, it's really designed for cool but not freezing weather.

However, under a shell, this would be a solid choice. It's not all that puffy so it would fit nicely. Personally, I like the Patagonia Down Jacket. It has a more classic design and is definitely warmer but you do sacrifice weight--the Down Sweater is a really lightweight piece. In that regard, this is an excellent jacket. You can take it with you anywhere you go and not have it be a liability.

Also, I'm not a fan of the narrower quilting that the Down Sweater has; wider quilting has a more rugged, classic look. But this is a jacket that will last a long time as Patagonia takes pride in the design and durability of their gear.

Definitely recommended.

Rating:*****

Love this jacket. Warmth without weight. I've used it around town and I've used it at base camp. It fits beautifully (athletic build, 6 feet and 170 lbs./12 stone, & I have the medium). It has enough room to allow me to layer, but is not baggy if just over a t-shirt. I tried the small; it is snug.

The outer fabric is sheer. "Downproof", like any other down sweater fabric, but it won't hold up against abrasions or heat. So, don't go bouldering or playing near the camp fire while wearing it.

I've tried other down sweaters and jackets and I simply prefer the design of this one best. The collar isn't too tall. The fit isn't blocky or bulky. It packs down into its own pocket. It is really well thought out.

As others here have mentioned, it's a great jacket. Plus, it comes with the Patagonia Ironclad guarantee - the only guarantee that rivals Backcountry's.

Scores 91 of 100 Possible Points

Rating:****

Using the The RateSkiGear.Com 100 Point Rating System™, this Patagonia Down Sweater scores 91 out of 100 Possible Points.

Why?

It's the perfect layering piece for those brutally cold days. Actually, you can reduce the numbers of layers due to high loft to weight ratio. The high fill-power of the down makes this unit highly compressable, but it has the loft to keep me from freezing to the bone.

Alone, this is a great "kick-around" piece on the street or in camp.

Dislikes: No hand warmer pockets, however, if your are wearing this under a shell it makes no differance. Very fragile fabric. Tears easily. Remember however, that the fabrics fragility is directly related to its weight, so carry some rip-tape and live with it!

Backcountry.Com's price is very good. I've looked around and most retailers no longer have this piece in stock. BUY IT!

Best Product

Rating:*****
I have been buying and using Patagonia products for 20+ years and I think the down sweater is the best product Patagonia has produced since the original snap-t. The weight and versatility of this jacket is amazing. I have worn my sweater to ski, and as a daily commuter jacket for over a year. In fact - I loved my original sweater so much - my kids got me another one for Christmas this year. I would bet I have sold two dozen of these jackets in the last year - as friends see mine and try it on. This is a must have piece if you spend anytime outside. I have worn mine in the evenings in Palm Springs, CA (mid-40's) and early in the morning in Crested Butte, CO, (-15 a few weeks ago). Versatility, styling, and weight make this a must have - my wife and kids all have one now!

Negative Reviews:

more fashion than function

Rating:**

this is the only piece of outerwear i purchased on impulse. i was stuck in new york city in 10º temps with little in the way of insulation layering so i stopped into the patagonia store to see what they had. i originally tried the large on in a bright green color and at the last moment, decided i wanted a the blue, so i picked one off the rack. even though it was the same size as the one i tried on, the sizing was much larger, and not as trim. much to my disappointment i discovered this AFTER i had paid and walked out wearing it. i actually ended up exchanging it for a medium almost a year later; a testament to patagonia's satisfaction guarantee.

the insulation to weight ration is quite good, especially if you find a size that fits you well. however sizing seems to be the problem as you sacrifice a snug fit for arm length. i am by no means oddly proportioned, but the medium jacket is about 2 inches too short in the sleeves. compound that with the lack of any way to tighten the wrists and you get a jacket that rides up your arms with just about any movement. this can get pretty annoying. don't wear this on a chilly day with gloves without wrist gauntlets.

for casual wearing around town, it's probably ok, but i think you could find more affordable alternatives. i can't imagine wearing this as a belay jacket as it is not that warm. also it breathes poorly. i'm not really sure what it's useful for except lightweight warmth in a pinch. for the money, i'd consider the arc'teryx atom lt, which i wish was available when i had bought my down sweater as i would have purchased that instead.

Men's Down Sweater

Rating:**
I really liked the weight of the jacket, the packability, and the color. I didn't like the fit. It was huge in the torso but fit my shoulders well. I feel like I'm a pretty average size large- 180 pounds, 6 feet tall. It seemed like I could gain about 20 lbs. Seems like I need a medium and a half? I have the same problem with my Figure 4 jacket too. The sleeve length and shoulders are good but the torso is huge.

comfortable, warm, recommended

Rating:***
Benefits: This 'jacket' is as warm or warmer than any fleece. Its very light and unlike a fleece with comparable warmth it can be easily stuffed into a backpack and you can't even tell its in there. And I also prefer this jacket over a fleece because it slides on. (If I'm wearing sleeves underneath, I don't like peeling a fleece off, or grabbing my sleeve to put one on.) Drawbacks: I'm kind of in-between sizes and I wish the large had longer sleeves. (The XL is too roomy in the midsection.) The collar on this jacket could be higher. Its lower than most other similar jackets and fleeces. And the low collar is actually what keeps me from wearing this jacket on very cold days when I could use it as a top layer. (If you like wearing a scarf, ignore this point.) Finally, the jacket is lightweight, minimal, and stuffable, but the zipper is tiny and there's no guard to keep the zipper from getting stuck. You have to be very careful zipping any of the zippers. There are pros and cons to this jacket but I recommend it for what it is.

Great for the weight

Rating:***
For many people, this could easily become a must have piece. It is very warm for the weight and layers fabulously. My main negative reaction is the cut, which is very "boxy". If you are chubby or short and thick, then this will fit fine. Being a "sweater" rather than a parka or jacket, it should fit closer through the chest and across the gut. On my frame it looks very bulky. I only live in the mountains, 24/7/365 and I really prefer the excellent Regulator jackets as the best layering pieces. They last longer, wash easier and are more useful over a wider range of temperatures. For example, this Down Sweater is not something you would want to wear when hiking up a trail with a pack on or when doing any strenuous work. For getting warm at base camp, it is totally great and it blocks wind fantastically but is not very breathable and certainly does not wick.

Micro Puff Over Down Sweater

Rating:***
I worked in the backcountry of Yellowstone for many years and used a micro puff for the many negative 30+ degree days. I wore it so much that I had a few slight tears in it. I returned it to Patagonia in hopes of repairing the tears. Unfortunately, it couldn't be repaired so they sent me a gift card and I decided to replace the micro puff with the down sweater. I was much happier with my micro puff as far as temperature control and the puff kept me much warmer in the frigid temps. In short, the sweater looks great but as far as functionality, I'd go with the micro puff. I'll be purchasing the puff for outdoor use and the sweater will stay as just a sweater.

Boxy and Large

Rating:***

This jacket is really nice, but the sizing is really bad. There is a permanent crease in the arms which doesn't help much when the fit is already boxy. There is a ton of room to layer under it and the length of the jacket is really long. I have the Patagonia R2 fleece jacket in a Medium and it fits perfect. I know that this jacket is considered to be a regular fit, but I definitely either should have went with another jacket like the Mountain Hardwear Nitrous or just downsized to a small, which I do not like to do because I would consider myself a medium usually. So just keep in mind, this is not fitted at all.

Lightweight vs durability

Rating:***
While I am thankful for the warmth of such a small and lightweight package, the zippers in this genre of jackets (as well as most everything in the micropuff series that I have ever owned, like my micropuff vest and hoody) continue to be the the first thing to fail, way too early for the price and life of the garment. The small plastic teeth don't seem to hold up, and pretty soon a few get chewed or bent and the whole zipper wont stay closed, or pulls out without much tug. It would be nice to put more durable ones on, even if it makes it heavier and unable to pack down quite as small.

great, can be improved

Rating:***
I am a huge fan of the patagonia gear and I have found great pleasure in nearly everything I have ever bought from this company. I absolutely love the down sweater and it makes me wonder how I went this long in my life without owning one. Unfortunately, I have to ask you to please make it stronger. I know that it is a lightweight garment, but it is just too delicate. Im always afraid I'm going to rip it and daily i have little feathers slipping out. Maybe you could still have this model and then introduce a more rugged one that uses a two layer shell.

Am I the only one that wasn't impressed?

Rating:***

It's really not that warm. Yes, it weighs 3/4 lb, and it packs down super small, but it's not much warmer than a heavyweight Capilene layer underneath a shell. That also packs down small, costs 1/4 the price, and weighs less. However, it doesn't block wind, so if you want this as your outerwear (for around town in the 40s, etc) it would be pretty nice. Also, the feathers are constantly poking through, and making little holes all over the jacket. It's okay--not great, but it doesn't totally suck either. I'll just stick with some fleece or heavy long underwear as a layer.

Creasing, pocket issues

Rating:***
Functionally excellent, but there's a crease along the upper arms that won't go away, and I've had the sweater for several months now. I've compressed it and smooshed around the fill, to no avail. Second, if you could make color of the mesh pocket the same as the shell, it wouldn't peek out and look odd when you wear the vest unzipped. If that's too much work, make the mesh match the most popular color. Still, a terrific lightweight-yet-warm jacket.

CHEAP ZIPPER

Rating:***
I HAVE PURCHASED MANY PATAGONIA CLOTHING ITEMS AND HAVE ALWAYS ENJOYED THEIR QUALITY. OVER THE LAST FEW YEARS HOWEVER, PRODUCTS LIKE THE MENS DOWN SWEATER FOR EXAMPLE, SEEM TO LACK QUALITY ZIPPERS. THE CUT AND FUNCTION OF THE DOWN SWEATER IS GREAT BUT FOR $200.00 DOLLARS I WOULD EXPECT MORE QUALITY IN THE CLOSURE OF THE JACKET. ASIDE FROM THAT IT FUNCTIONS WELL. VERY LIGHTWEIGHT AND LAYERS BEAUTIFULLY UNDER A SHELL JACKET. GOOD FOR CITY WEAR NOT EXPEDITION WEAR.

Keep'n Warm

Rating:***

Picked this up and since then it has been my go to jacket when things get a little cooler. Works great over a few lighter under-layers or whatever you have on underneath. Also works an insulating layer under a shell when you need a little extra warmth. Packs down ridiculously small and stuffs down into its inner pocket. Wear it anywhere and it works and gets attention. Highly recommended and one of my favorite pieces.
