The DAS Parka is Patagonia's warmest synthetic, high-loft protection for full-on alpine conditions – its water-repellent shell is windproof, quick to dry and durable.
Cold, wet and scared is no way to go through life – unless you're an alpinist, and then at least you have the DAS. Our bombproof belay parka just got better, with superior PrimaLoft® One (170 g in the body; 133 g in the hood and sleeves), a hydrophobic, more thermally efficient insulation that stays truly warm even when wet, is more compressible, and takes up significantly less pack space – but is just as warm. The light-yet-tough quad-ripstop shell (1.7-oz 30-denier 100% all-recycled polyester) with a DWR (durable water repellent) finish sheds snow and blocks wind. An adjustable hood fits over helmets, and the high front insulates your face. Finer points: insulated handwarmer pockets, a chest pocket, inside mesh pockets for drying gloves and a 2-way front zip that lets you see your belay device. Stuff sack included. Drawcord hem. Recyclable through the Common Threads Recycling Program.

Decent jacket, ok warmth

Rating:****
This is my first DAS parka so I can't speak to any changes over older models (as other reviewers have). So far our winter in the arctic has hit -25C and this coat has kept me warm on walks to and from work (3kms each way) in wind and snow and for a full day ice fishing (with layers under). I won't use it for anything much colder than that though and I was shocked at how thin the fill seems to be when I first opened it, probably because I am used to seeing down jackets and not the new synthetic fills. A neck warmer is critical. The large fits me a tad on the big side and I can't keep drafts off my throat, especially when hood is up. Overall I have been surprised at the warmth of this jacket, Pros: light weight, good fit (Large fits a tad big - 6'1", 165 lbs, but the cut is great), waist draw string to stop drafts, warm hood, stuffs down small into provided stuff sack Cons - seems thinly filled, durability of outer covering?, has a high zipper but still neck drafts, zipper is quirky to get started

Perfect Parka

Rating:*****
I can honestly say that I work in some of the most extreme and hostile weather places in the world. I travel the state of Alaska from the end of the Aleutians to Point Barrow and Fort Yukon. I protect my life with this parka. I have used it in -65 degree with a merino zip tee under and I know I will make it from building to building or checking the lighting at the airfield. It is so light and packable that it makes packing or stuffing away on moments notice a pleasant experience. I spent 7 days on the top of a mountain overlooking the Bering Strait. I was stuck inside a facility and weather made traveling prohibitive. I volunteered to go outside to get weather and wind condition readings to evaluate getting us extracted. I loved going outside in my DAS and trying to use the wind meter. I never even felt the wind or the cold. That experience converted several of my co workers to switch from other products to copying my parka. You cannot go wrong if you need a parka that your life depends on protecting you from the elements.

Stellar puffy

Rating:*****

This jacket helped me get through sub-freezing temperatures on a high's course during a Wisconsin winter. I originally had a large to allow for layering; however, right before the winter hit, I exchanged it for a medium and it made the world of difference (5' 11" and about 180 lbs.). I still have plenty of room for layering, and the fit is much better. Like the other reviewer shows, the inside mesh pockets allow gloves to dry out, and act as a parking garage for many other items. The collar did seem a little high at first, but ended up providing me with great coverage for my face while I was sitting waiting for participants to climb up. The hood works very well with a helmet underneath, but without one, it takes some minor adjustments to prevent it from flopping if you're doing a little walking. Overall, it's a great belay parka, and a great piece for someone who, like me, wanted to make sure they didn't ruin a down jacket while learning the basics of taking care of their gear. Another sweet product backed by Patagonia's awesome guarantee.

superior to all

Rating:*****
This is my favorite winter coat by far. A bit puffy, but if you don't mind, it's ideal. I have worn this with just a cotton t-shirt underneath between subzero-50F weather, and have been completely content, in some cases sweating with an additional layer. I personally wouldn't use this for shredding just because it has the potential get wet during a sunny day in the snow. I prefer to use this more when I'm in the city and it gets super cold. Also, nice for snow-shoeing on a cold day with a pack, or even doing some shoveling. The hood is nice size and can even be drawn in tightly to cover one's face. Chest pocket is key for a cellphone and/or iPod, hip pockets are deep and there's a pair of mesh pockets internally that are nice for a small nalgene or even a book. I completely recommend this jacket because when I got this, I knew it was exactly what i was looking for. Price is a bit steep, but you're paying for quality as always.

Sweet Specific Use Puffy

Rating:****

This is my third insulated jacket. I have a lightweight Primaloft (Mountain Hardwear Compressor) and a lightweight down puffy (OR Virtuoso). I wanted something to fill the void in between the two. A jacket that was WARM but also not overly bulky utilizing synthetic insulation. The Patagonia DAS Parka fit the bill. It's super warm (with 170G of Primaloft versus the 100G of most jackets), well made, and still very packable. It is super comfortable on those cold days. Just beware that this is a belay jacket cut large in the body so you can wear it over many layers. I wear a size Large in Patagonia fleeces and shells and they fit very close, but this jacket in a size Large has way more room and is on the baggy side. I tried on the Patagonia Micropuff hoody for comparison at the Patagonia store, and it has a closer traditional fit, compared to this jacket. The Micropuff only has 100G of Primaloft though.

Good parka - not perfect

Rating:****

The DAS is meant to go OVER clothing - including your shell. So, if you get it in your normal size, it will fit BIG on you if you're not wearing it over outerwear. If you want to wear the DAS as a normal parka, get it one size smaller.

Don't like Patagonia's color choices - they're pukey. Good 'ol black is where it's at, esp since the other DAS colors stink. This is one of the best items in Pat's line-up, you think they would get wise and open up a rainbow of color choices. Pat is bad about that as a company overall. Limited choices in colors and those available were thought up by some mental midget.

Overall a great parka, but on the pricey side - should sell for around $225...that would price it where it's worth. Esp with the plain-jane LL-Bean-like color choices!

beyond excellent

Rating:*****

I own two of these- one was a military contract overrun (yes the military uses these) and one purchased here. Fit & finish: AAA+; materials quality: AAA+, smalll details, like pocket placement and zipper location: AAA+. Keeps me toasty on the coldest, windiest days-and the Patagonia DWR is very effective. I own a lot of high-end parkas (NF Serow,Canada Goose Arctic, MH Sub-Zero, Arcteryx dually, etc) and this is the one I reach for every time. WELL WORTH THE MONEY.P.S.: one other thing: Patagonia's lifetime no-questions asked warranty is great. I had 6 months of cancer therapy and lost 92 pounds. Do you know that they exchanged both of my DAS Parkas for smaller sizes, no questions asked? That kind of service is priceless and rare today. That alone is enough reason to buy this parka- BTW Backcountry's policy is the same- they have treated me beyond great.

Super Relaxed Fit - Thing Feeling Fill

Rating:****
I have been purchasing Patagonia product religously for the past 2+ years. I'm 5'10" about 175 pounds. I have ALWAYS worn a Patagonia Medium - I just received this jacket as a gift for Christmas - and the medium has enough room for my Patagonia Down Jacket to fit underneath! I've sent it back to try the small on for size - Will let you know how it turns out! Like another reviewer I too as shocked at the apparently thin feel of the fill - though this is the first primaloft purchase I have bad from Patagonia - I intend to put to the test as soon as the small arrives!

Love this parka

Rating:*****

I did a lot of homework before dropping some cash on a coat like this, but I think I totally got the most bang for my buck. I needed an overlayer for mountaineering trips and this jacket has never disappointed me. It packs up well and has great mesh pockets for keeping a waterbottle and mitts warm. The one comment I have for others looking at this coat is that it is really sized big to go over your shell and everything. If you want to wear this as an everyday jacket, I would maybe size down for a trimmer fit.

It should be 'der einen' Parka

Rating:*****
This jacket is the bomb - here in the North East when temps hit 15 and the winds are ripping, the Puff Jacket just won't do. Time to bring out the Das Parka. So light, so comfortable so fringin warm. I have worn the jacket on long snow shoe hikes and also waiting in line to get into The Daily Show (3 hours in Feb). I waited a long time for it to have a black inside – the space age silver was not my thing. It completes my winter collection of gear from Patagonia.

one inch of loft - maybe

Rating:***
Beware - this is not the same DAS Parka that was made a few years ago. They changed the fill, and decreased it. Warmth was supposed to remain the same, but I am skeptical. This is warm into the 20's, but not less unless you are very active. Well made, but not a jacket for really cold weather.
