nice but costly

Rating:****
great for active sports in the winter (below 30 degrees) like skiing or hiking or less strenuous activities in the fall/spring (30-45 degrees), also depends on wind speed. They are very comfortable to wear, easy to move in, and very lightweight. If you are in really cold weather (10 degrees or less) and/or it is real windy, you will need additional insulation. The only negatives for me is the cost and they are not warm enough on their own in below zero weather (unless there is no wind and you stay moving). I thought since this is their warmest rated (Capilene 4) then they would be good for below zero weather on their own so I was a bit disappointed about that but when worn in the right weather, they are awesome! There is no fly on them which is also very nice.

A bit wide in the leg

Rating:****
I think I have a standard body size, 5'10, 175lbs, 10.5" shoe, 44" chest, 16.5" neck, 34" waist. So I was surprised to try these pants in a size large and the legs were loose, I'd expected a clingy pant. Mind you I'm not talking MC Hammer pants here...but at the same time I wouldn't put these into the "form fitting" or "tights" category. Part of me wanted to trade them in for a set of mediums but the waist is already snug. My fitting room problems aside, the Capilene 4 is an ace material for cold weather wicking and provides all the flexible movement you could ask for. Toss these on under a set of insulated pants and a pant shell and you are ready to take out the skis or snow shoes.

Must Have!

Rating:*****
I ordered these after fishing this past thanksgiving with my brother for redfish here in SC. The whole trip i was freezing cold and promised my self that that would be the last time i was like that. The first place i stopped was here on moosjaw and started to read reviews. I got the capilene 4's because of what i read. I must say these things keep me mighty warm during transit on my boat. Not having tried the other capilene i cant talk for them. Also, i decided to wear these out when it was in the 30's degrees under my jeans... i was super warm and sometimes inside the bar a bit to warm. would highly recomend

Nice enough but nothing remarkable

Rating:****
The material is good; on the thicker/warmer side for a base layer but breathable due to the fabric's grid structure. These would make nice layering tights. They're looser than form-fitting but fit closer than most "loose tights" designed for running, etc. The waist band is separate flat elastic (like a pair of briefs). Maybe using the same fabric as the rest of the garment to cover the elastic would make it look a little less like underwear. My one complaint was that one leg was about one inch shorter than the other. Functionally this probably doesn't matter but aesthetically, it bugged me enough to return them.

High quality, not extremely warm

Rating:****
I live in Milwaukee, where it gets very cold, so I wanted a base layer to wear when getting outside. This high quality product does the job, but is also great standalone, to wear around the house or when sleeping. It is a little loose, not as tight as Patagonia lightweight bottoms of the same size. I would have rated it five stars, but when it gets colder (under 40 F) this base layer may not suffice, even though it is rated Capilene 4, in which case I have to combine it with Patagonia lightweight bottoms on the inside.

Finally!

Rating:*****
I've been waiting for three decades for these! They are warm, soft, comfortable and durable. We have 4 Weimeraners in our home and one is a 6 week old puppy. Lesser garments have been shredded in no time. These have stood the test and tho not sold as leisure wear have remained form fitting and comfortable without pilling and unraveling. They should be issued at birth to all humans who live far enough away from the equator! I never imagined paying $65 for long underwear bottoms but I'm so glad I did! Jay

Utah Snowboarding

Rating:*****
A week long trip to Utah with solid snowboarding for three out of the four days the men's capilene #4 bottoms performed beautifully. Taking a stint into more of a vagabond the bottoms were merely dried by the fire on a nightly basis and provided the solid layer of protection I needed while enjoying three of Utah's finest mountains and backcountry destinations. They will even give you the courage for 30ft cliff drops knowing that if all else fails, you'll at least have your lower half covered.

The best I have bought

Rating:*****
I bought these to go on a photo shoot in Romania, and I would have to say this is the warmest layer I have ever bought. I tend to do a lot of standing around waiting- and I was never cold, and actually sometimes I got too hot and had to remove a layer! I highly recommend these to anyone going out in the cold or hates the cold!

Windy City Wear

Rating:*****

I purchased a couple pair to brave the cold winds of Chicago. I was concerned about my knees getting cold and stiff. The fit is very comfortable; there is no cinching in the waist, cutting up the crotch, or itching. They are very comfortable indoors and outdoors. I did not even feel the Chicago winds!

Purchased these to replace a vintage (20 year old) pair of Lifa polypro bottoms. They've performed great, from skiing the Rockies to early morning dog park outings at 10 degrees. Hopefully they'll last as long as the one's they're replacing. Bought the large size, but might have been fine with medium (35 inch waist).

Negative Reviews:

a mans long john pant for the coldest of temps and NO fly...

Rating:**
this just doesn't make sense to me.. these are for the COLDEST of temps and uses yet there is NO FLY... so, Patagonia must believe that when in the most extreme of conditions these are to be used in that a man should have to drop everything JUST to relieve himself....when asked, Patagonia customer service said "many men" now want to wear these as PJ's or to jog in and thats why they removed the fly on the current model... Patagonia must now only cater to the "metrosexual" couple of hours a weekend outdoors types and has forsaken the professional guides, fisherman, lumberjacks, patrollers and instructors and every other hard working man.. those metro types should just invest in regular PJ's or running pants and Patagonia needs to go back to it's roots of designing/providing quality gear for "outdoor" users... they were awesome bottoms when they had a fly, fairly useless now for extended cold, cold times (even worse when one remembers needing to have to drink lots of fluids to stay warm/hydrated)... try the Browning Hunderwear, they have a fly in expd weight bottoms....

Not as warm as I thought

Rating:***

Fit: 6-4; 235; 36 inch waist. 35/36 inch inseam. XL fit pretty well. A little looser than I wanted, but I have a feeling the small would've been too tight in the thighs and butt.

Performance: Not as absolutely warm during periods of inactivity as I was hoping for. My first experience with Capilene. Seems better suited to active pursuits. I wore it beneath a pair of shorts for a run on a 30 degree morning and was fine - warm and dry. I wore it beneath a heavy overalls and jeans on a few 15 degree nights where it was stop and go at work and froze when I wasn't laboring.

Murphout at Backcountry.com on 01/23/2007

Good, but not the best Capilene product that I've seen.

Rating:***
..Got these for Christmas to add to the Capilene arsenal 5 pieces from Cap 1-4 now, and I have to say.. For once I'm not totally impressed. My biggest beefs No easy access for the unit, and the ankle cuffs are very loose with excess material. This makes the snowboarding functionality a pain.. Too much material bunched up in boots causes pain, and the rest stops in the trees require a full trow drop. Not fun in blowing -20 whiteout to say the least! If I had to do over, I would go with a Cap 3 + Cap 2 bottom for versatility.
Mark at Moosejaw (Spring 2010) on 12/28/2007

not so warm, no fly!

Rating:***
Supposedly, since the polyester fibers "wick perspiration away from your skin," this underwear should be warmer than cotton underwear in certain situations. However under normal conditions, I have found heavyweight all-cotton long underwear to be warmer. These Cap 4 bottoms do NOT have a fly. Makes them inconvenient.
Anonymous at Altrec on 05/08/2009

Not too much warmer then cap3

Rating:***

these pants are high quality, they however are not that much warmer then capilene 3 pants. If you are looking for a very warm baselayer pant look elsewhere.
