Bought my 2nd Precip

Rating:****
Replaces Precip I've had for 5 yrs or more. New one much nicer. Softer fabric, looks like better breathable coating. Hood really does fold up to collar, never could figure out how it worked on the old one. Much more attractive color (old is "clay", new is lithium/titanium). I don't agree with comment about "lots of pockets," mine has only 2, but they are large enough to stuff mittens or a hat into them if I get warmer during a run. Unlike other comments, it seem to offer me enough protection from wet weather. But I rarely run more than 45 minutes at a time, and I am so wet with sweat when I return I might not be aware that the rainproof feature is to blame.

All in all, I found the old one a serviceable jacket with a more feminine design on the new one.

Performs well and dependable

Rating:*****
I bought this jacket in 2004; it was my first purchase after moving to rainy Portland, Oregon. It is now 2008, and I am still wearing the same PreCip! I've worn this to many mountain summits, camping with the kids, hiking wet trails, and running errands around town. I NEVER get wet from the rain in the jacket. A couple of times a year, wash the jacket with some "tech wash" (available at REI) to refresh the waterproof coating and then toss it into the dryer on "low". This has kept my jacket looking and feeling new for four years. I am considering another PreCip now, but only because I want another color :-)
Also, be sure to use the pit zips if you are hiking to avoid condensation. If you use it right, this is a highly dependable purchase and I totally recommend this product.

Made Rainy Season In Costa Rica!

Rating:*****
This jacket is the bomb!!! I took it to Costa Rica with me on an outdoor adventure trip that including rafting, hiking volcanos & waterfalls, and hiking through the rainforest. This thing really held up nicely and kept me extremely dry during Costa Ricas wet season. The locals told me this was the most rain they have had in over 120 years in the country and many parts were flooded. With this jacket fortunatly I was beyond dry! The material is breathable for the money. I did not get the sticky feeling some rainware provides. I would like a bit more breatability, but that comes with double the cost of this jacket. Overall I was extremely satisfied with the precip jacket

Great little jacket

Rating:****
I love this jacket to pieces...literally. I let it lay in a box over the summer months and it stuck to itself and when I tried to separate it, the lining stuck and tore. It is a great rain jacket, just be absolutely sure that it is dry when you put it up and be aware that it's not going to be a jacket that you'll have for years. I never got wet in it...the pit zips were great for humid days (which us southerners have a plethera of!) Great design! Great price!

Kept me dry!

Rating:****
The jacket keeps me dry when it's raining. It is breathable and possibly the most durable rain jacket I've ever owned. However, it is not cut well for a 'curvy' woman. It is a bit snug in the hips and has extra material from the waist up - almost as if the waist up is a size bigger. It does layer well, and all in all is a great piece!

Great purchase!

Rating:*****
I bought this jacket because it was on sale and I didn't have a rain jacket, I knew it would come in handy for hiking, camping and running. Very light weight, durable and easy to pack. I layered it with a fleece while hiking in high altitudes and it did great in the snow too. I would strongly recommend this jacket.

Smartest Jacket Purchase of My Life!

Rating:*****
I wear this coat every time it's raining. It is especially great while camping or backpacking when I don't necessarily have shelter. It is completely waterproof and fits comfortably. It is the smartest jacket purchase I have ever made.

Nice jacket, but it does get wet

Rating:***
This jacket is very light and I can easily fit it in the smallest stuff bag I have. It has great design (lots of pockets, pit zippers, great hood). But it also has one big problem: it's not waterproof enough. Since I mostly hike in the rainy Pacific NorthWest, the jacket gets tons of rain on it and it doesn't hold on to the weather very often. Usually it starts getting wet only after 2 hours of good rain. But this jacket is great for not so rainy days in the woods, or dry days in the winter.

Great jacket - but not perfect

Rating:***
I've had my Precip for over five years, and it has been wetting through for over three of those years. I emailed Marmot about that and they said I would have to send it to them, which I never got around to doing. So I get partial water protection from it. On the plus side, it has great features - great hood, zips, etc. Mine seems really big for the size, but other people don't seem to have that problem. I wound consider buying another, but would also compare other products.

Problems with the draw cord lining

Rating:***
Marmot made the lining of the draw cord and the zipper for the pocket from a cheap nylon material that is not water proof (look at the bottom of the jacket). The seams to that nylon are not taped.
With very wet conditions the water will seep through the seams and drip to the nylon and soak that nylon which will not dry. It will get the layers that are under wet.
To help with that use DWR treatment.
