PreCip:The next step's technology that enables us to construct the lightest, most compressible, technical, waterproof and breathable rainwear in the world. Ventilated and breathable to keep you dry from the inside, PreCip rainwear has plenty of pockets and custom fit features to keep you warm, dry and comfortable.
The key to PreCip™ is its barrier technology: a microporous polyurethane that is impregnated with silicon dioxide particles. These particles create small, numerous, very consistent holes that allow the barrier to pass small water vapor molecules but not the bigger liquid ones. This keeps the rain out while letting your sweat vapor work its way outside, away from your body, to keep you dry from the inside as well as from the outside. PreCip™ rainwear is compressible enough to stuff into a water bottle and comes in enough colors and styles to travel with you anywhere'± to the mountains, the city or overseas.

Put through its paces

Rating:****

Ok, if I could give it 3.5 stars I would.

This jacket has been worn in some pretty brutal weather over a 2 month-long backpacking (the hiking type) trip, as well as other shorter hiking trips and while travelling. It's been through rain of every description: drizzling, douwnpour, misty, big drops, etc. Sleet. Snow. Hail.

Most of the time, this jacket did the job. It kept out water, the hood kept water off my face, the pit zips helped me dump heat, and it wasn't too clammy inside, though it sometimes stuck to me under my pack straps if I was wearing just a tank top underneath. However, it did start to leak on one of the sleeves partway through a rainstorm, and then kept leaking there during all the ones after it. Granted, I wasn't treating the jacket very well...it was stuffed everywhere, dragged across branches and rocks, and got washed a couple times in conditions where I couldn't really follow the care instructions and had no dryer (which you need to get the DWR back working). Once I got home, I treated the jacket with a repellency-restoring wash, stuck it in the dryer, and I haven't had it leak again. I do find myself reaching for Gore-tex in a downpour though...I don't quite trust this jacket in heavy rain anymore. For durability, it's been great. No rips, tears, or fading.

I've also used this jacket as a windbreak while climbing, and the Angel-Wing Movement worked great - the jacket didn't pull out of my harness at all. =)

Some of the things I like:
Angel-Wing Movement. Durabiality. Hood design

I don't like:
It leaked. The velcro on the pocket flaps sticks to the mesh lining.

Overall, this is a great jacket if you're looking for something that's lightweight and that you won't feel bad about carrying in your pack all the time "just in case". It's great for backpacking.

Awesome Jacket!!!

Rating:*****
Okey. So when is my Precip lime colored jacket gonna wear out? Never. I have had it for a few years and no excuse to buy a new one but, I just love it so much that I wanted it also in brown. I mean I have taken this jacket around the world through backpacking, backcountry skiing, rafting trips, you name it and it is an amazing jacket. Layer under it and you can use it year round which I do. I am always dry in this jacket even in a long downpour hike, ski, raft... I am dry. The pit zips are awesome and easy to open and close on the move and I love the cut. I feel like a woman not some guy with a straight jacket on that does not fit my hips. You ladies know what i mean, right? I have a figure... this jacket shows it. Oh, and not to mention, it washes well and dries quick. I cannot say enough and if i could substantiate it in every color for every day of the week, I would have one for every day of the week. But, I already have two now. Maybe in three years marmot will keep this jacket on the retail options and I can get yet another color. So buy the jacket. It is a steal for the uses, value and overall performance of course.

Love It...even though I wish the arms were longer!

Rating:*****

I love the performance of this jacket, and the Marmot brand quality. The zippers work great, pit vents are a wonderful invention I didn't even know I needed, and the color is great! The only complaint I would have is that I wish the arms were longer and the body more form fitted. I am 5'8", 120lbs, and have a long torso and long arms. So it is often difficult for me to find womens clothing that are long enough. I purchased the small first, and the arms were at least and inch and a half from my wrist. I then exchanged it (super easy to do thanks to the great people at backcountry.com, even rushed it to me so I wouldn't have to go through the agony of waiting, and waived shipping charges!!) I then received a medium. I'm pretty happy with the arm length, still wish it were a bit longer. I like my sleeves to go at least an inch or two below my wrist for stretching purposes. For me, the medium is a bit big in the width area, but leaves plenty of room for layering in the fall/winter. It does an awesome job of blocking out all wind and rain. Very satisfied! Love backcountry.com, we buy ALL of our stuff from here. You can't beat the prices or the exceptional service!!

Excellent all-arounder

Rating:*****

The rainiest May in NYC in years blew out my old commuting jacket, so it was time to upgrade. I'd been thinking about the Precip for years, and finally had the excuse I needed! The priorities for me were a jacket that was lightweight, compress-able, had sleeves long enough to ride in without my wrists sticking out and didn't fit like a tent. I started off with the Tamale in Small which was a bit too orange for me and a little short in the wrists (I'm 5'6 with long limbs), so I exchanged it for Sweetpea in Medium. It's a pretty bright green, but I like that it pops out of the background. The body is a bit roomier than I might choose, but I think I'm going to like that once I'm sticking more layers underneath it. The sleeves reach just past my wrist-bones when I'm riding my road bike, and the hood stays put on top of my helmet surprisingly well. The pit zips are great, and easy to grab when riding to ventilate quickly. Having ridden home in the pouring rain several times since getting it, I can vouch that while the rest of me got soaked, my arms and torso were comfortable and dry. Completely recommend this jacket.

Great Rain Coat

Rating:****

Got this for a recent 4 day trip to the BWCAW (Late Aug08) - worked great, even when we got 2.5 inches in one night. I did not find the hood to be too small, even while wearing glasses and a headlamp, but then I have a pretty small head. Packs up in about half of the space available in the pocket/pouch (left pocket) with a nice hang loop and zipper tab on the inside to use while packed. The sizing was great and not boxy nor overly skinny, fitting nice and looking nice at the same time it has enough room to layer a fleece underneath withough feeling stuffed in, which allows you to use it as a do-it-all shell instead of packing another coat. My one and only complaint is that on the XL, the velcro straps to hold the cuffs tight do not get small enough to fit my medium frame - every time I went to adjust ropes on the tarps, I got a stream of water running from my wrists to my elbow - inside the coat.

Bought Just In Time!

Rating:*****

I wound up wearing this as weather system Hannah (or maybe it was Ike) blew through the upper reaches of the East Coast. I was on an island in the middle of a lake that straddles the border of Maine and New Hampshire. It was windy and wet and I was SOOO glad that I bought this before the trip. My upper body stayed dry. The pit zips kept me unsweaty, though with them closed, it's breathable but I don't know if it qualifies as "the most breathable" - I'm guessing there's something a touch better. The pockets were big enough to hold small rolls of toilet paper (what a pain going to the latrine that night) and my flashlight. My lower body was wishing that I got the pants. And now that I'm not on an island, I regularly wear this out and about. Oh, I'm usually a petite. I got the extra small and it's a touch big with just a t-shirt on but is nice because I can wear layers underneath it and it fits perfect. Great jacket!

Fantastic jacket!

Rating:****

I bought this jacket at REI before a trip to Vermont in the summer. My previous jacket was stolen in Hawaii. This jacket far surpasses the older marmot jacket I had. It's lighter end easier to pack. It's really not that breathable so the pit zips come in handy If warmth is a concern just simply layer underneath it. Also the hood is a bit large. The brim does droop down if not adjusted. I would like to see a hood that you can remove but I guess that defeats the purpose of a rain jacket and it would also add weight. I'm short and stocky and had to buy a large. The sleeves are a bit long but not obnoxiously long. I didn't have a chance to use it in Hawaii this past season because it doesn't rain too much in September. It worked beautifully in Pennsylvania as it rains quite often in the summer and came in very handy while breaking down an art tent in a steady rain. Bottom line: I'll use it for years to come.

Best rain jacket I've ever owned

Rating:*****

Finally decided it was time to upgrade to a high quality rain jacket last summer and I don't think I could have picked a better one! Although I have yet to use it in a really heavy rainstorm, it has worked great in drizzly conditions anywhere from hiking at 10,000 feet to just walking home after work. I have not had any problems with the inside feeling damp - the pit zips are great, and even without using them the jacket seems pretty breathable. I love that it is so lighweight and easy to pack...I take it everywhere with me in the summer because the weather in Colorado can be so unpredictable. As far as sizing, I'm 5'6" 135 lbs...the small fits perfectly, and has enough room to layer a fleece underneath but still looks flattering if I wear it on its own. Overall, I've been so happy with this jacket that I'm thinking about using it as a shell for skiing this winter!

Great rain jacket for cycling!

Rating:*****
I tried this on in a local store and liked the fit, but they only carried it in black. I wanted a bright color for bicycling. I found a nice bright yellow on line--really pretty color! I bought it roomy enough to layer over fleece on cold days. It's completely waterproof, and works great on my bike! We have been having a very rainy fall, and it keeps me dry. I plan to wear it all winter for bike commuting, and also for skiing as an outside layer. In retrospect I could have used some reflective tape. I haven't even tried the pit zips yet, although they seem like a great idea on longer rides. Many bike-specific rain jackets are sized for men, or if for women, are styled to be tight (which isn't really very practical), so I was delighted to find a woman's waterproof and functional rain jacket in a comfortable, attractive style.

Missed the rain, thanks to the PreCip!

Rating:*****

As a Colorado native, you learn to be prepared for any type of weather any time of year. This means anything from wearing shorts to shovel snow, from breaking out the fleece in mid July. I brought my conveniently stowed PreCip jacket to a concert this summer at Red Rocks, despite the cloudless day. A California couple even laughed when I said I was packing my raincoat in my handbag. However, before Modest Mouse came on we found ourselves in the middle of a downpour. Thanks to the PreCip, I was able to stay dry enough(on top at least) to remain in the venue, and even able to move down closer to the stage while less prepared mouse fans were forced to seek shelter. I have also used this jacket during hikes or walks across campus during a sudden Colorado storm. I highly recommend it to anyone who likes to remain dry!

I really think the only differences between this jacket and a trash bag are the sleeves and the cut, otherwise they perform about the same in the rain. This doesn't breath well at all. The jacket's only redeeming qualities are that its really light and you can almost always find it on sale.

Precip is all wet.

Rating:**

After a few washings (3) my jacket lost it's water repellency, and now I have to use a silicone spray to get the water to bead up and roll off. The white liner inside near the hood is tearing too. Not happy at all with this jacket.

Skimpy cut

Rating:**

The features are good but the cut is very skimpy. I am always a small, but this small didn't leave room for a long-sleeve shirt or even a thin fleece under it. Too short, too narrow in the sleeve, too narrow in the torso.

It's not waterproof! DON'T BUY IT.

Rating:*

when rain falls on this jacket, it does NOT repell water. The rain drop damps the surface and the moisture goes through and the inside of the jacket is damp also.

This is my experience in light rain weather. I feel cheated.

Very skimpy cut

Rating:*

I'm always a small but this was just plain skimpy. It was too short and too narrow at the hip.

Didn't keep me dry

If you're stuck outside for a while, this is not the jacket you want to be wearing.

Great...for the first 4 years

Rating:***
I loved this jacket. I'm not sure how long you're supposed to expect a jacket like this to last, but at the 4 year mark it started to crack and delaminate. The worst was around the drawstring in the hood and edge at the bottom of the jacket. Not cool. It was 100% waterproof until that started though. I was ready for a new jacket anyway, although I went with a different brand.

Not SURE!

Rating:***

I am not sure yet whether I am thrilled with the jacket or not. First, it seems to run small. Second, the "breathability" issue is in question. I am planning on taking it on a Baltic cruise in a few weeks. THAT may be the ultimate test. It seems pricey if I end up not thrilled with it.

nice but breathable?

Rating:***

It is definitely waterproof and lightweight. I keep it in my hydration pack when I am hiking peaks. It is not very breathable at all. Also, the size small is perfect everywhere but the sleeves are too short and I am only 5'7”. I wish I had bought the Mountain Hardware Epic like my husband.

had to return

Rating:***

I liked the jacket, liked the sunny yellow color, but the hood is just too shallow to cover your face for when a downpour really does occur. Super light weight though so maybe it would be great for somewhere that it is just damp or having a small amount of precip.

hood is too small

Rating:***

I love everything about this jacket except the hood. It doesn't cover well enough and falls back off my head too often. I prefer an Arc'Teryx where I feel really covered.

Awkward Fit

Rating:***
I really liked the colors, the material and the style. But there was something awkward about the way the pit zips fit.

Decent

Rating:***

The fit is very boxy. I suggest ordering one size smaller than you usually wear.
