Good multi-tasker softshell

Rating:*****
This is a great jacket to have in your arsenal. This is my first/only softshell, and I've used it for everything from a night on the town to snowboarding. It is very comfortable and very warm. It has kept me warm with a sweater underneath in ~30 degree temps with 20mph winds. I wouldn't call it a perfect snowsports jacket just because it is not quite waterproof (but very resistant) and is not quite long enough to keep snow out of your back on those nasty tumbles. For most everything else it is great. Breathes well enough to wear indoors for a while, but it would be overkill for all but the coldest of running days. It is made in China.

Fit:
I am 5'9" 170lbs and it fits very nicely. The length covers all but the longest untucked casual wear and the sleeves are generously sized. There is enough room underneath for a bulky hoodie or a couple of technical layers.

Appearance:
The fit/finish and build quality is excellent. The material is very quiet and comfortable, there is a very fine microfleece on the entire interior. I bought the green color, which does look a lot brighter than most online images depict.

Store:
Rock Creek shipped fast and the price was the best around.

I really WANT to give this thing 5 stars...

Rating:****

I've had it for about a year, and if it's below 50°F, there's probably a 98% chance that I'm wearing this jacket. I've taken it on many a backpacking trip, and it's my go-to jacket when it gets chilly. I bought it to replace a Marmot fleece, and while it's a hair less warm, it blocks the wind MUCH better than the fleece did.

I love the look, love the wind-resistance, and love that it's warm-but-not-too-warm. I also love the low price I paid for it on backcountryoutlet (I think around $80? can't really remember).

All that said, there are just a few qualms I have with it that keep me from giving it five stars. First, the weight: I do a lot of backpacking, and while I love it when I'm wearing it, it adds significant weight to my pack, and leaves me wishing for something lighter. Second, the pockets are not accessible while wearing a pack or harness, and that's just dumb. Third, and most importantly, there are no Pit-Zips. Add the ability to vent heat, and I would probably forget the first two things and give it five stars, but after wearing it recently on a strenuous hike in 4°F, I was seriously wishing for some heat-dumping capability.

Great jacket!!

Rating:*****
Great jacket! The fleece inside is soft, which is hard to find for a soft shell jacket. It's very windproof, I can barely feel the wind. Water beads up when it lands on the jacket. I haven't tested it in a full down pour yet, but I have other gear for that. The inside chest pocket is a cool feature it's nice and big, I can fit a checkbook inside of it. The fit is pretty nice, the sleeves are just long enough to reach my hands but not too long that I can't read my watch. The torso however, I feel is a bit short, but I'm 6' tall with a 33" inseam. The torso is long enough that it goes past my waist, and the back is longer than the front which is a plus. Overall the fit is nice, I'm 6' about 175 lbs and got a Medium, its a little loose all around, but a Small was too tight. It's much like the REI One jacket but at a cheaper price.

extremely versatile

Rating:*****

this is my most versatile piece of gear right now. athletic fit, but not so tight that you cant layer a thermal and fleece underneath. perfect length to wear a likewise athletic fitting shell over top. i was perfectly comfortable wearing the gravity with a midweight thermal & midweight fleece in 20 degree & cloudy weather. breathes exceptionally well, even when i did sweat after a hard run (in 45 degrees and sunny), i was always dry by the top of the chairlift. i especially appreciate that there are no pit zips bulking up the fabric under my arms. the whole obsession with pit zips is rather illogical for any shell, but its utterly ridiculous for a highly breathable softshell. if you ever get too hot, just open the biggest vent you got: the front zipper!!

The best option out there!

Rating:*****
[...], North Face stuff doesnt compare. THis is my third season of hard, daily use and the Gravity is more or less like new. 3 north face products were falling apart within a week and returned. The Gravity colors are also very cool. Now I have a black and a blue/gray. Gets compliments and best of all i dont look like every other schmuck who paid too much so they could look just like everyone else. If you like value, style and durability and dont like to follow the crowd, get the Gravity. And remember to unzip it on occasion, only issue is it's too warm at times and doesn't breathe...but thats why it has a zipper! I like being warm!!!

Great midlayer or light softshell

Rating:*****

I bought this jacket today, immediately before going skiing. Last time I wore a Marmot Driclime as my midlayer, I was getting cold. Today with the Gravity, I was toasty all day, from standing in line for a lift ticket until I stopped for the day. I stopped for dinner after my day of skiing, had a long walk to my car and was still warm. I love this jacket. Well-priced, fashionable (somewhat fitted, well-designed stitching, cool looking pockets, etc.), and most importantly very functional. It was at most 24 degrees F without wind chill factor today at the warmest...

Great Jacket

Rating:*****
This jacket fits the way soft shells are supposed to, with an athletic fit. The sleeves are a bit longer than most jackets to allow climbers (who they're designed for) coverage while reaching upwards.

The jacket has a great soft feel to the inner lining that gives it some added warmth and also comfort. It's got enough pockets for everyday use and inside the main hand warmer pockets you'll find the drawstrings for the waist cinch cord.

For the price you'll not find a better jacket.

Perfect Shell

Rating:*****
Great shell for skiing, hiking, camping or just bumming around town...

This shell blocks the wind so surprisingly well it is shocking... I have worn it in conditions as bad as -9 degrees f with a windchill of -35 and the wind didn't touch my skin...

If you need to layer, this is your shell... You could shed everything but your base and this and not be too hot...

This jacket is great!

The clothes make the man.

Rating:*****
This jacket smells of cool, looks beyond trendy, and is way past technical. Fit is loose & snug at the same time. With the disappearing hand pockets, the uber chic sleeve pocket, this jacket wins. Velcro wrist, super water resistant, mock-turtle collar; combine this with a nice base layer or two and you rule. Oh, I forgot to mention the inside chest pocket for a brandy flask; but you all knew what that was for anyway. ;) XPHALCON

The Gravity jacket

Rating:*****
I have 2 other medium size Marmot softshells, the Sharp Point and the Super Hero. The Gravity is the most "heavyweight" of the 3 and really does have the best fit. Nice freedom of movement, nice pockets, zip up to the chin neckline, and velcro cuffs make this jacket an ABSOLUTE steal for the price (by comparison to the other 2). I would have gotten only the Gravity had I know all this prior.

wayy to short

Rating:***

This jacket is very comfortable and has good construction but the fit is not what is advertised. I got the XL and the length is wayy to short, about down to my belly button or waist. Also im 6 4 200 pounds and the jacket was a tight fit for an XL. not a well put together jacket for taller people.
