Great poles but grips are flawed

Rating:****
Mechanical design of the pole is superb. The balance is excellent, light weight, yet strong, fairly easy to adjust though the catch sometimes needed fiddling to re-engage.

Despite my favorable experience with them after 10 days of trekking in the Ladakh Himalayas, I returned them because the grip material has been dyed black, and the dye turns your hand dirty black (w/o sweating) after a few hours of use. Leki needs to revisit their choice for grip material. My wife has the womens version which has a cork grip and it does not have this problem

Would buy again

Rating:*****
We bought the Thermolite Aergon Antishock Poles by LEKI and immediately took them on some serious day hikes in the Canadian Rockies. The poles are easy to adjust, strong, and light. They collapse down to fit in a large suitecase with ease.

On the Trail of the Six Glaciers they were helpful going up the hill and almost indispensible coming back down. I'm 6 foot and my 5-6 wife both found them great.

My only question is why we waited so long to buy them.

very light and packable

Rating:****

took them on a long hike up around Mount Cook (New Zealand) and they worked as advertised.

shock absorber isn't huge and one of them started to stick a little, but did the job. locks worked a little loose a couple times, but easy enough to fix.

carbide tip is AWESOME. much better than others i have used. would hold on some pretty sketchy locations...

Light Weight and Great

I go for comfort and easy to use. I have the Diva but wanted to try something different. This is a great pole will a lot of the same features as the Diva. My friend used it too and had nothing but success! I would highly recommend it to anyone.

Negative Reviews:

Locking mechanism not 'super'

Rating:**
I bought these polls primarily because they are lightweight and shock absorbing - two excellent features. The grips are good, no complaints - though they are advertised as 'non-sweaty'; I disagree, (though technically it's my hands that sweat, not the grips). I find the wrist bands chafe, so I rarely use them - which leads to lots of dropped polls. I think the wrist bands are designed 'upside down'. The bands have a soft padded side and a rougher side with a logo patch sewn on. If you wear the wrist bands so they are not twisted, the rougher, logo bearing side is against your skin. If you wear it so the soft, padded side is against your skin, the band has a twist in it that rubs against the webbing of the thumb. Either way - the bands aren't comfortable for long.

The polls, when locked in place are strong. They have an excellent tip that will grab just about anything, rock, dirt, roots. I haven't found a surface they can't grip (though my girlfriend won't let me try them on the kitchen floor, so I can't vouch for that)

The biggest problem I have is the twist locks. Firstly; there is something incredibly frustrating about trying to twist two half inch diameter aluminum tubes with sweaty, tired hands. It didn't take too many miles of AT to mess them up. The twist locks work because the twisting action threads a plastic (read cheap) nut up and down a screw. The plastic nut is inside a tapered collar that spreads when the nut is threaded up, and collapses when it's threaded down. Clever idea but poorly implemented. On one of my polls the rubber bushing slipped off and the nut threaded all the way off the screw. On the other, the poll was (unwittingly) over extended and the quarter inch diameter internal rod bent the second I put weight on the poll. I was able to fix both problems after I got off the trail, but I have little faith in the life expectancy of these polls.

When hey do finally go, I will be replacing them with Black Diamond's flick lock design.

They work most of the time

Rating:**
Well, I thought a high-end pole would solve the twist-lock problem, but to no avail. Having used bargain poles for several years, I had hoped that a good pair of Leki's would solve the difficulty in using the twist lock mechanism to adjust the pole's height. No luck. These are as bad as the other bargain poles. If you do not take the time to re-tighten them every two hours or so, one of the shafts will collapse, often at a terrible time, when you are really leaning on them. My other frustration is that, at times, the adjuster will not tighten at all. I have to remove the entire shaft, fiddle with it, reinsert it, and then it will typically tighten down.

Arghhhh!

Sometimes the mechanisms just won't tighten. Very frustrating and embarrassing if you're with a group. Took them into REI and they said there was nothing wrong with them. Bought a pair of Black Diamonds for much less money which work much better.

One worked well.

Rating:***
Both poles started off well, then 1.5 miles into the trail one bent and snapped without much weight on it at all. The other pole worked great for the remaining 12 miles. The handle was still grip-able in the downpour during the last 2 miles.
