For wet hikes and damp camping trips, the Keen Women's Targhee II Mid Hiking Boot is a wonderful shoe to call upon. The waterproof and breathable eVENT® liner allows moisture vapor to move outward before condensing and turning to perspiration. Meanwhile it blocks raindrops and stream water from soaking inward. Wet environments require solid traction, and the Keen Targhee II Mid Hiking Boot delivers with aggressive 4mm lugs. The ESS shank receives credit for a big assist here as it provides torsional rigidity for traveling over rock-strewn paths and traversing loose slopes.

Features:

  • Dual-density compression molded EVA midsole
  • ESS shank for torsional rigidity on uneven terrain
  • Leather, webbing, and mesh upper with moisture wicking synthetic liner and eVENT waterproof barrier
  • Non-marking carbon rubber outsole with 4mm multi-directional lugs for positive traction
  • Patented toe bumper offers protection from unseen obstructions
  • Removable metatomical footbed provides excellent arch support
  • S3 (short for shock, suspension, stability) heel support structure reduces the chance of ankle twisting on impact
  • Weight: 14.2 oz. (403 grams) per shoe

Most comfortable boot I've ever owned

Rating:****
I've had these boots for almost two years and today they decided to die by tearing apart at the seams. I'm so very sad I'm running out to get a new pair first thing in the morning as I just don't know what I will do without them. I do a lot of day hiking in mostly moderate PA terrain but these guys have hit trails of all types all over the country. I figure I've put in a good 1000 miles on them so I'll share what I know:

The Good

-Just so darn comfortable out of the box. My closet is filled with boots that I bought that I thought I could break in but it just never seemed to work out. I've never, ever, had a blister from these boots. On super long day hikes, once your feet start swelling, I've never felt that painful toe pinch that all my other boots have given me. They just fit so well. They do run small so buy 1/2 to a full size bigger than normal.

-The traction is amazing. You will fall over from losing your balance long before this boot let's go. These boots walk the fine line between good support and flexibility to do climbing or running when you need too. Just a great multipurpose boot.

-The laces stay taunt even when untied. I find this to be a big deal because sometimes yes, you know you laces are untied but you just can't deal with it at the moment for some reason. With these boots you could essentially do a whole hike with your laces untied.

The Mediocre

-Waterproofing. This is a pro and con. The waterproofing was great the first 6 to 8 months then it just gradually declined until it was gone. I had to start treating the boots every few months to keep them remotely waterproof. I've never had a pair of lightweight boots that kept their waterproofing so this is to be expected.

-They died. I've never worn a pair of boots so long they died. From what I've read 1000 miles is about right but still I was surprised.

That being said, for the price, and the many happy miles I will be buying them again.

I first bought these boots from REI. A sales person suggested a 7 1/2. They felt tight, but he said the boots run large. I usually wear an 8, but I thought he was right. I was in a hurry and took the smaller size. I didn't listen to my feet. After wearing the boots around the house I was in agony. My friend told me to order the size 8 from Zappos. I'm so happy I did! These boots are wonderful! They are waterproof, which is something important to me now that my friend and I are into hiking a lot. Not to mention the ankle support is also a must. I didn't have to break in the boots and we went on a 10 mile hike with no blisters. My feet were very tired! The only one issue I have was the small peeling that is on the rubbery toe area when I kicked a rock while climbing. I'm not sure if the rubber part is going to peel more, but I'm hoping it won't. These are the first pair of Keens so I can't say I've had them for years and years. I do use other insoles, but my feet have always wanted good support there. Another thing I do like are the laces. I don't have to double knot them like my other boots. I'm hoping the 5 star I'm giving will be correct. So far, so good.

Love these boots!

Rating:*****
I bought these boots for a 3.5 day, 60 mile backpacking trip with significant elevation gains and losses. They were definitely up for the task. It only took a week to break them in. While the weather was clear, we did have to ford several small to medium sized streams and my feet stayed nice and dry. Not as stiff as other backpacking boots, they had a nice amount of give that made stream crossing and light scrambling easy. But they were still stiff enough for carrying a 30 lb pack. The rubber toe cap is nice for clumsy people like me who seem to trip on every decent-sized rock. The boots just bounce right off rather than getting caught. Keen shoes size a bit small, so buy a half size up from your usual. They are also a bit wider than other boots, which I like, but are narrower than Keen casual shoes. All in all, I abused them on their first trip out and my feet are super impressed!

I just received the Targhee II Mid in the monument/iguana color. I didn't buy these to go hiking. I just need extremely good support and walking any distance at all is my goal. I had foot surgery 8 months ago for a posterior tibialis tendon repair with a tendon transfer. I had a split in my tendon after teaching aerobics for 18 years. I also have extremely flat pronated feet. I have a tear in the tendon in the other foot, as well, and I am trying to avoid more surgery. Well, I have to tell you that I can already tell a huge difference just walking around the house that these shoes are going to change my life! My orthotics fit perfectly inside. My ankles feel supported, and the pain in my feet seems to have vanished! I will need to wear them quite a bit more to be sure, but so far so much better. Ahhh. Relief. I also love the color. They make my feet look smaller.

LOVE THESE BOOTS! LOVE THESE BOOTS! LOVE THE ZAPPOS CONSULTANTS THAT HELPED ME FIND THEM! I had ordered two other pair to try (a Merrell and a Solomon) and neither fit right. I called the Outdoor Consultants at Zappos and explained where I was going (northern Minnesota, Boundary Waters Area) and how the other boots had fit. He suggested these instead. I ordered two different sizes and found the best fit was a full size up from my normal shoe size. Oh, and did I mention this all happened on a Wednesday and I was leaving on Friday! Love the fast shipping! So I hiked in these with no breaking in period, and they were FANTASTIC! So comfortable and supportive! Hilly trails, loose rocks, some water, etc. didn't matter: these boots were great. Basically, I didn't think about my feet at all because they felt so good. Can't recommend them enough. You might need to order a size larger than normal, though. LOVE THESE BOOTS!

So very comfy...

Rating:****
I looked for these boots after reading the reviews here and on some other sites and I have to say, I loved the way they felt the moment I laced them up. They are very comfy, with excellent support through the arches. I normally use superfeet in all my hiking and backpacking boots but I haven't had to use them with these boots. They are warm, without being sweaty. They have great traction, even on wet terrain. From Denali Park AK to Yosemite CA, hiking in the mountains or walking along a park trail, these are fantastic. The only caution I would give those in search of a good pair of mid-weight boots, is that these run really small. I usually wear a 7 to a 7 1/2 and I had to buy an 8 1/2 in these. All Keen's seem to be the same though, my Keen sandals are also a full size larger than other brands.

I Have 3 pairs

Rating:*****
I wear mine all year long although in winter I have to stick a foot warmer in the toe on extremely cold days when outside for long periods. The arch support is also very good and I love that I can wiggle my toes and no more callous' between pinched toes. I have three pairs cause I can let one pair dry and wear another pair. Also I have the fear that now that I found a great hiking boot that they will stop making this model. I hike with only one pair of wool socks with no problems. I recommended these to several other hikers just yesterday. I do not have problems with feet slipping forward and toes getting jammed. Best of all the laces are none slip so I don't have to keep reajusting and they rarely untie like the previous brands.

Excellent for trekking. I wore these shoes for trekking around Switzerland and I cannot stop raving about them. There was no need to break them in; I just threw them on my feet straight from the box. I normally wear a size 6 or 6.5, but purchased these in a 7 since I knew I would be wearing thick, warm socks with them. The 7 was a perfect fit for me. Also, my feet are very flat and it is hard for me to find any comfortable shoes. I would give these shoes 10 stars in comfort if I could. The duration of my trip was mostly in rain or snow, but my feet were always happy, warm, dry and gripped walking surfaces just fine. No need to look elsewhere. Buy these shoes and only buy from Zappos!

A comfortable, stylishing outdoor shoe? Check this out!

Rating:*****
Keen really got it together on this model hiking boot: comfort and style! I ordered my true shoe size because I wear the same weight cotton socks year round. They have a fabulous fit, especially with a rounded toebox that that does not accentuate the length of my size 8-1/2 foot. The padding around the ankle is comfortable and gives me stability when I'm out in the woods. Another feature I enjoy is that the tongue of the shoe is a bit wider, making them easy to pull on and off. Definitely would recommend and would consider purchasing in another color. Styling has a fantastic feminine appeal for outdoors without making me look like a lumberjack. Thanks, Keen, for constructing an outdoor shoe for women that is both functional and has wardrobe appeal!

Great backpacking boot!

Rating:*****
I was a guide for many years and loved my ASOLO backpacker boots for 10 years. It was time for new boots and time to downshift to a lighter boot for my more recreational and period backpacking use now after my guiding years. I just used these boots for the first trip and they were fantastic. Light, waterproof (through 2 rain storms), great traction on very slippery terrain, and comfy.

I had only gone on one hike in them before hand and was worried about blisters but didn't get a single one. It was a 5 day trip and they were definitely sturdy enough for the job. My husband bought the men's version and was equally pleased! Keen makes a great boot!

These shoes are very comfy and sturdy and required no break-in period. However, I don't find them nearly as attractive as most other Keens, and I'd definitely stay away from the Walnut color; for some reason, the reddish leather looks worn out after only a week of wear. They look like a pair of old shoes already, which is a bummer. I spend very frugally and have to make shoes last, so paying this much for shoes that look like they've already been around the block for a year or two is mildly depressing. The shoe itself is great though, just consider a different color. I bet the others hold up better.

Super comfy but dont stay dry

Rating:***
I loved these boots all summer during fair weather. I did 100 miles in them and then fall hit. The first major bad weather hike was drastic because the shoes filled up with water. The mesh goes down past the side of the toes. They really are good otherwise.
