Great support for Achilles injury recovery - Asolo Flame GTX - I am recovering from an Achilles tendon rupture (tear) and surgery. I have been living with an Aircast for about 3 months. The cast completely immobilizes the foot and tendon. As a result all the muscles from the knee down atrophy - especially the calf muscle. I started transitioning around the house into my Columbia Trail Meister with the very soft Omni-Grip soles. However, my current Columbia trail shoes don't offer any arch or ankle support. I was looking for a midweight three season hiking boot for a transition shoe; to support my Achilles injury. I still need good ankle support and overall support of my fore foot. I narrowed my choices to the Columbia Frontier Peak GTX and the Asolo Flame GTX (Men’s size 9 in narrow width). The Columbia Frontier was much stiffer and narrower than my Columbia Trail Meister. Unfortunately, both shoes ran a bit smaller. My own mistake. I know you want to have your hiking boots snug. Both boots seem true to fit. I shipped both shoes back and went with the Asolo Flame GTX. After a couple of days walking around the house and the yard, they are beginning to break in. The temperatures are still in the 90s around Great Falls, Virginia, but my hot feet are NOT sweating. So, these GoreTex hiking boots really breathe. I also tested how waterproof they are with a garden hose. The boots stayed nice and dry. So far, so good. It’s hard to compare the Columbia Frontier Peak GTX to the Asolo Flame GTX. The Asolo fit, material and construction are superior. By far the best hiking shoes I have owned. These boots feel and look very technical. Meticulous construction. Lastly, this was my first experience shopping with Zappos. I was very impressed with the overnight shipping (just as advertised), FREE shipping both ways and customer support staff. I originally placed my order around 8 p.m. EST and my boots arrived around 10 a.m. the next morning. WOW! Furthermore, no hassle sending both boots back for a larger size. Awesome! You guys really get the Internet model. Cannot be any easier. You guys are in the same league as eBay and Amazon. I am surprised I have not heard about you guys sooner. I should write a business school case study on Zappos.

Great Boots, holy moly fast shipping! First off, Zappos rules with their overnight shipping. Most places say overnight and the package will arrive 3 days later in remote ole Telluride, CO. I ordered the boots at 9:30 pm and they were on my doorstep at 1pm the next day! The boots are great; I love the stiffness and support. The placement of the upper lace loops really seals em up tight around your foot. I have done 4 hikes with them and taken them through streams, mud, scree etc. and have been very impressed with the durability of the boot. After hiking a long downhill I got a small blister on my R. Big toe but it’s no biggie, just breaking them in to match my feet. Custom insoles are the next step. I have normal width feet and would not recommend these boots for any narrow footed person (unless you get the narrow size). All-round great boot, Zappos had the best price and by far the best shipping I have ever seen from the web.

Flame on! Not like it matters, but the styling on this boot is pretty cool. While the yellow & orange (Grey/Aranthracite style) won't lighten your load on the trail, they may help draw attention to your stylish footgear… which may attract you to trail bunnies! All in all this is a good light hiking/short-haul backpacking boot. The rubber toe patch is worth the purchase just because no one else offers this anymore. They fit well out of the box and have good ankle & arch support. I'm a little worried about the grommets across the instep. They have a swivel feature that seems like it could break off if you bashed your foot into a rock really hard. The padding at the very top is on the thin side, so socks with padded uppers may be a good combo. The size was slightly larger than the Raichle boots I've been used to wearing. I would say it’s only a 1/4 size difference. Nothing the right socks can't address.

I had these boots for 1.5 years of hiking. They are dead now, but i was pretty happy with them. Their greatest strength was in the downhill traction. They have great stopping power. For those of us with an asymmetrical foot (narrow hell, wide toe box, i guess smooshed out due to all the hiking!), this isn't a perfect shoe. It's not bad, in this respect! But not as good as the Kayland Convert/Contact and Apex series for the asymmetry. Still, they held up very well, no seams breaking (unlike the Kayland Convert which, with only 150 miles on them, are busting open!!), and look nice.

It's hard for me to compare, precisely, the gore lining of the flames to the eVent lining of the kaylands. My feet never feel hot in the Kaylands, even in the hottest of months. They also keep out torrential rain better. I can't say quite the same for the Asolo Flames. But the Flame bests the Kayland Convert in traction.

This is my 3rd pair of Asolo boots, and as usual I love them. I am not a backpacker or hiker, I stand 6'3" and tip the scales at 310 lbs. I wear these boots practically everyday and not a better shoe I have ever put on my feet. The soles generally last approx. a year and a half for me. They stand up to everything I throw at them. I work for a cheese mfg. co. and am in and out of the plant all day long and they (the soles) withstand the vinegar and acids from the whey, which for most boots I have tried in the past is a pretty good feat considering those boots only lasted me about 6 months. I would recommend these boots to anyone. They are worth every penny of the $195.00 I spent on them. To anyone considering buying them, but afraid of the price, you will not be dissapointed.

I chose this boot for its reputation for effectiveness, durability, and its looks. Oh yeah, and I didn't want to pay more than $200 for a pair of boots. Unfortunately, I haven't yet had the opportunity to wear them for a hike, so I can only speak for their initial comfort and the apparent quality of construction. I've warn them around for daily tasks and they're both comfortable and supportive. They're also interesting to look at without being ridiculously flashy (dark brown style). I'm on the cusp between a US size 9.5 and 10. I went for the 10 for this shoe, and I find they're snug in both directions, while leaving me just enough room to avoid my toe touching the box when walking down slope. However, they make me wonder for the first time if I might need to be in a wide shoe rather than D-width. I'll update if I get blisters.

Best boots i've ever bought!!

I usually take days hikes every to every other weekend and take often multi day trips into the backcountry. I was looking for an excellent all around boot for my needs, one that could be used for light hikes and extended trips with more rigorous terrain. These seemed to fit the bill. After extensive research on my part. they seemed like the perfect buy. Indeed they were, they are so resilient they can even be used for backpacking! Yet they are listed for light hiking. The Gore-tex lining was the icing on the cake for me. They fit amazingly well, have unbelievable traction and even look good. I had to buy the green Superfeet to take up some extra volume, which only added my being impressed. Overall these were an awesome buy. Price was well worth it considering what they can be used for. I will never by anything but an Asolo boot.

I originally ordered Keen Oregon PCT Hiker Boots. They really didn’t fit properly. I contacted Zappos and exchanged them for the Asolo Flame GTX. Zappos was a pleasure to work with. Returning the Keen's was a snap. The new boots were at my door the following day. Excellent customer service. The Asolo Flame GTX is a high quality boot and fits true to size. I wear just over an 11-1/2 and the size 12 fit perfectly. Wearing Smartwool Medium Hiker socks with a liner created the perfect fit. I've had several day hikes locally in preparation for my 5 day hike in the Utah Mountains in August. So far, I am very impressed with the boot and the break-in period has been short. I recommend the boots and Zappos. I will buy from them again.

SUPERB SERVICE AND GREAT COMFORT! Wow, what great service at Zappos! I ordered the boots with standard shipping and was upgraded to overnight shipping just for being a customer. I ordered them at 6pm and got them at noon the next day! I was stunned and extremely pleased. The boots are great looking and very comfortable. They are a little stiff, but with some break in time they should soften a little. I plan to get back into backpacking in the future. I haven't gone in about 15 years. I will also go hiking with the flames on the trails in Tilden Park. The design of the boots is very nice and high quality. I like the toe protection that will prevent scuffing. Once again thanks to Zappos.com for A+ #1 service.

FLAME GTX - I typically wear a "B" width, so the stock "D" width seems a tad too wide. Likewise with the length. The 11.5 is too short and the 12 is a tad too long. However, overall this is a very nice shoe. I previously had the FSN shoe in the same size and have worn the lugs off the soles. The local outdoor stores did not carry the Flame GTX, but did carry the Fugitive GTX, but only in one color and did not have any 12's in stock. Zappos has a good selection all the way around and to "boot" have a very nice shipping policy. Keep up the good work.

I generally like asolo boots, especially full-leather - durable and comfortable. This variety fell apart after less than 100 miles - seams split, socks visible.

Moosejaw's service is excellent and I loved the boots right out of the box. I was replacing a pair of Asolo TPS 535s which have served me well over the years. Unfortunately, Asolo disappointed me this time. While the right boot fit perfectly, the left boot was a bit narrow in front and pressed my little toe under the next toe. I returned the boots immediately. Perhaps I will try a pair of 520's but they are somewhat pricey.
